As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of stage-to-screen adaptations over the past few decades, I must say that the success of “Wicked” is nothing short of enchanting. Having grown up with the original Broadway production and later seeing it come to life on the big screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic joy. It’s heartening to see such a beloved story resonate globally, breaking records and defying the recent trend of underperforming adaptations.
The box office dominance of “Wicked” serves as a testament to its timeless appeal and universal themes. I can’t help but wonder what other stage productions might follow suit in captivating audiences on such a grand scale.
Speaking of grand scales, let me share a little joke that came to my mind while reading about “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. Why did Sonic cross the road? To get to the other side… and generate $74 million in international box office debut! A bit predictable, but then again, who doesn’t love a good pun?
The musical “Wicked” by Universal has now become the top-earning Broadway adaptation of all time at the worldwide box office, surpassing the record previously held by “Mamma Mia” from 2008 and achieving this impressive achievement.
In a span of six weeks since its release, “Wicked” has raked in an impressive $634 million globally. On the other hand, “Mamma Mia” accumulated $611 million (unadjusted for inflation) during its entire box office run. Notably, “Wicked,” featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has outperformed 1978’s “Grease” ($188.62 million) as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation domestically, earning $424 million within the U.S. This achievement is advantageous for Universal, as they anticipate the second part of the big-budget musical, “Wicked: For Good,” slated to open in 2025. Remarkably, this record stands out amidst recent underperforming stage-to-screen adaptations such as “The Color Purple” (2023), “West Side Story” (2021), “Dear Evan Hansen,” and “In the Heights.
Currently, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is setting new records for the franchise as it raked in an impressive $74 million during its international box office premiere. This figure takes into account previews and represents the largest overseas opening in the family-friendly series to date. For comparison, the previous installment, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” only managed $33 million from foreign markets when it was released this year. In its opening weekend in the UK, “Sonic 3” earned an impressive $15.1 million, followed by Mexico with $10.3 million and France with $7.3 million. The film is set to open in another 10 territories, including Korea, Brazil, and Italy, next week. As of now, “Sonic 3” has already made a total of $137 million in North America, bringing its global earnings to a staggering $211 million since opening nine days earlier in the U.S.
Additionally, “Nosferatu” made a debut on international screens, earning $3 million from only five markets. This R-rated gothic tale, helmed by Robert Eggers and featuring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, will expand its international release in the upcoming year. In North American cinemas, “Nosferatu” grossed $21.1 million during a typical weekend and $40.3 million during its first five days of screening. Focus Features is handling the distribution in North America, while Universal is responsible for overseas distribution.
Despite the arrival of fresh films, Disney’s “The Lion King” prequel, specifically “Mufasa,” dominated international box office rankings by earning an impressive $77.1 million in 52 territories. The initial reception for “The Lion King” may have been rocky, but it appears to be recovering quite well; the movie has sold $214 million worth of tickets internationally and a total of $328 million worldwide so far.

In another instance, “Moana 2,” a Disney continuation, accumulated $36 million abroad during the weekend, boosting its international earnings to a whopping $487.8 million. This animated Polynesian voyager tale has garnered a staggering global total of $882 million and is poised to surpass the $900 million mark soon. The upcoming “Moana” sequel contributes to Disney’s stellar year, strengthened by the box office triumphs of “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” each raking in a billion dollars.
