As a seasoned movie-goer who has seen my fair share of cinematic masterpieces and disastrous flops alike, I must say that the box office race between Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is reminiscent of a high-stakes game of cat (or should I say lion) and mouse. Both films have proven to be crowd-pleasers, with their family-friendly charm and engaging narratives striking a chord with audiences.
The latest addition to the “Nosferatu” franchise, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, is an R-rated gothic tale that has captured the hearts of horror enthusiasts and casual viewers alike. The film’s impressive opening numbers are a testament to its terrifying allure, much like the hypnotic gaze of Count Orlok himself.
On the other hand, “A Complete Unknown,” featuring Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, is a musical biopic that has garnered significant attention and acclaim from both critics and audiences. With its second-largest opening in Searchlight’s history, it seems that Chalamet’s charm and the enduring appeal of Dylan’s music have struck a chord with moviegoers.
In conclusion, “Nosferatu” is poised to dominate the horror scene for the remainder of the holidays, while “A Complete Unknown” will undoubtedly be the go-to film for fans of musical biopics and Timothee Chalamet alike. And as for me, I can’t wait to see what these films have in store for us next – maybe even a dance-off between Count Orlok and Bob Dylan!
Oh, and let’s not forget about the erotic thriller “Babygirl” starring Nicole Kidman, which has divided audiences with its mixed reviews. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see if it can turn things around in the ring – or should I say boardroom? After all, as they say in the world of high-powered CEOs and intern affairs: “It’s not over until the boss (or in this case, the movie) says it’s over!
Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” are having a close battle for the top spot at the North American box office. Over the past five days since Christmas, each of these family-friendly films have earned approximately $60 million.
According to calculations, “Sonic 3” had a slight edge during the typical weekend (earning $38 million from Friday through Sunday, and a total of $59.8 million across 3,769 cinemas since December 25th), whereas “Mufasa” took the top spot over the five-day period ($37.1 million between Friday and Sunday, and a total of $63.9 million from 4,100 theaters since Wednesday).
As a movie enthusiast who has been following the film industry for quite some time, I must say that the recent releases of “Nosferatu” and “A Complete Unknown” by Focus Features and Searchlight Pictures, respectively, have truly caught my attention. Over the extended holiday period, these two newcomers made a strong debut, garnering praise from critics and surpassing initial expectations. Having witnessed many films that fail to live up to their pre-release hype, I was pleasantly surprised to find both of these productions delivering on their promises. The remake of “Nosferatu” offers a fresh take on the classic vampire tale, while “A Complete Unknown” provides an intriguing glimpse into the life and times of Bob Dylan. Both films have left me eagerly anticipating further developments in the world of cinema.
Under the guidance of director Robert Eggers, “Nosferatu” featuring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, made its debut in third position during the regular weekend, grossing $21.1 million and accumulating a total of $40.3 million over its first five days in cinemas. The studio shared that an impressive 40% of ticket sales were made on the day preceding the viewing. This R-rated gothic horror story, which revolves around a dreadful vampire who pursues a tormented young woman, is estimated to have cost approximately $50 million to produce. Given its initial success, it seems to possess the longevity necessary to warrant its production budget.
Title “A Complete Unknown” with Timothee Chalamet portraying the creator of “Like a Rolling Stone”, debuted at No. 6, grossing $11.6 million over the weekend and exceeding expectations with a total of $23.2 million in its first five days. For Searchlight Pictures, this is their second-largest opening weekend ever, trailing behind 2009’s “Notorious” ($20.4 million). This R-rated musical biopic has production costs over $70 million, which means that with theater owners keeping around half of ticket sales, “A Complete Unknown” will find it challenging to achieve profitability. However, Chalamet’s growing reputation as a bankable star, following the successes of “Wonka” and “Dune: Part Two,” should help ease this struggle. Additionally, films centered around famous musicians like “Bob Marley: One Love,” “Elvis,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” have been popular box office hits recently.
David A. Gross, head of Franchise Entertainment Research, predicts that ‘Nosferatu’ will monopolize the horror genre for the rest of the holiday season. Conversely, “A Complete Unknown” is expected to lead among films catering to an older demographic during this period. This group tends to need more time to decide on a movie outing, which could boost ticket sales over the coming month.
Initially struggling at the domestic box office against “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” during its debut weekend with earnings of only $35 million, the film titled “Mufasa”, which had a budget of $200 million, is now recovering. While critics haven’t been favorable towards it, audiences seem to be responding positively, leading to increased interest around the Christmas season. To date, the Lion King prequel has made $111 million in North America and a total of $328 million globally over nine days in cinemas. If this momentum continues, Disney is expected to maintain its 2024 box office success with films like “Inside Out 2”, “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Moana 2”. After five weekends, “Moana 2” has already earned $882.5 million worldwide and is projected to surpass the $1 billion mark in the upcoming year.
So far, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has earned $137.5 million within the U.S. and $211 million globally. With positive feedback from critics and audiences alike, this third animated escapade featuring a fast-paced blue hedgehog character is set to surpass its predecessors: 2020’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ ($148 million domestically, $319 million worldwide) and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ from 2022 ($190 million domestically, $405 million worldwide). Produced at a cost of $122 million, it looks like this third installment will be another box office hit for Paramount. It comes as no surprise that plans for a fourth movie have already been made.
Additionally, gracing the silver screen is the A24 erotic thriller “Babygirl,” which made its entrance in eighth position with a gross of $7.2 million from 2,115 cinemas. The adult-themed film, featuring Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO who embarks on an affair with an intern, has garnered varying opinions, boasting a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B-” grade on CinemaScore.
In summary, Amazon MGM’s motivational sports drama “The Fire Inside” managed to sneak into the top 10 earners, gathering $2 million from 2,006 cinemas during the regular weekend and a total of $4.33 million across five days. This film, which tells the story of American professional boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, marks the feature directing debut of Rachel Morrison, who was nominated for an Oscar for her cinematography work in “Mudbound.” With a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade from CinemaScore, the $12 million budgeted “The Fire Inside” has received praise from both critics and audiences.
According to Gross, it’s a relatively small production for a sports drama. However, due to its budget being less than $12 million, a theatrical release will boost the film’s earnings beyond ticket sales, and it could potentially recoup its costs solely from domestic box office revenues.
In the top five, both “Universal’s ‘Wicked'” and “Disney’s ‘Moana 2′” performed exceptionally well. Over the standard weekend, “Wicked” earned an additional 19.4 million dollars and 31.7 million over five days, raising its domestic total to 424 million and worldwide total to 634 million. During the same period, “Moana 2” took in 18.3 million dollars traditionally and 28.3 million during the Christmas season, bringing its North American earnings close to 395 million dollars.
