As a lifelong Whovian who has traversed time and space alongside the Doctor countless times, I must say that “Joy to the World” is undoubtedly one of the most poignant and heartwarming stories I’ve ever encountered in the vast expanse of Doctor Who lore. The tale masterfully weaves together themes of loss, redemption, and the transformative power of love, all set against a backdrop of cosmic adventure that only this beloved show can deliver.
This year, Time Hotels and Star Seeds will be joining the Doctor for their holiday in the Doctor Who Christmas Special. Delve into all the happenings and unravel the ending in our comprehensive recap and explanation below.
Isn’t it just like Christmas not to have a Doctor Who Special? Fortunately, we won’t have to discover what that would feel like since a fresh episode is scheduled for December 25th.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Ncuti Gatwa’s ongoing journey as the Time Lord! In this enchanting holiday tale, he finds himself in the peculiar Time Hotel, where he’s racing against time to unravel a cosmic mystery. Accompanied by a spirited young woman named Joy, our Time Lord embarks on an adventure that promises to be as captivating as it is festive!
Delightfully, “Joy to the World” can now be streamed! However, in case you’ve forgotten the series’ events, let me fill you in (be warned: significant spoilers lie ahead!).
The Doctor lands in the Time Hotel in the 2024 Christmas Special
The story kicks off with the Doctor exhibiting his exceptional skill: effortlessly traversing time as if it’s merely stepping stones. Swiftly following one another, he passes through enigmatic doors in 1940s Manchester, the Orient Express in 1962, and Mount Everest in 1953. In each location, he presents the perplexed onlookers with a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin-flavored latte.
In another location, at the Sandringham Hotel in 2024, a young woman named Joy arrives and settles into a private room. She appears content with the rather sparse accommodation, as a cheerful receptionist gives her a tour. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs when a strange alien, distinguished by its green head, enters Joy’s hotel room through the standard door. (The one that all hotel rooms seem to have.)
The extraterrestrial sports a handcuffed briefcase on his arm, and utters peculiar phrases to her: “A cosmic embryo will flourish, and matter shall awaken.” However, before any event transpires, the Doctor unexpectedly enters with a platter of goodies, startling everyone present in the room.
Later on, find the Doctor stepping out from the TARDIS, clad in his robe, having materialized at the Time Hotel in the year 4202. His mission: sourcing milk for his tea. This extraordinary establishment boasts an array of doors, each leading to a specific era in human history (“Experience all of human history as quick getaways.”). Not long after, he’s stopped by Trev, one of the hotel staff, who wants to know what he’s up to.
The man with the briefcase
As Trevor speaks, the Doctor observes an unusual individual loitering near the reception area, his briefcase attached to his wrist. This man seems to be idle, which lends an air of suspicion to him. Later, he moves towards the bar, presumably waiting for a room on the third floor to free up.
With Trev assisting him, the Doctor assumes the role of a room service worker, collecting his tray and venturing into the guest rooms for an investigation. Simultaneously, Trev keeps a lookout, checking if the man exits from the bar area.
But as the man enters the establishment, he encounters the bartender and repeats the cryptic phrase: “The star seed will unfurl and the body will resurface.” He transfers the briefcase (alongside the handcuffs) to the bartender in this process. This enigmatic influence seems to be transferring to individuals of higher status, and it isn’t long before Trev is summoned to the bar.
Regrettably, after the briefcase is handed over, its former owner meets an unfortunate end, effectively disappearing or falling apart. Later on, Trev locates the hotel manager, who just so happens to be a green alien, residing in Joy’s hotel room, and gives him the case.
The Doctor lands in Joy’s hotel room
In a different room, the Doctor notices an alien carrying a case. He attempts to contact Trev, but unfortunately, Trev has passed away, having given the case to someone else. The Doctor proceeds through another door and finds Joy confronting the same alien. The alien offers the briefcase to the Doctor, who declines.
Following numerous exchanges, Joy eventually grows agitated and claims the matter at hand, causing it to somehow link with her, leading to a state of hypnotic daze. Additionally, she retrieves his hotel room key card, appearing entirely indifferent as he slumps onto the bed, ultimately losing consciousness.
In a heated moment, the Doctor pulls out a mysterious glowing artifact from his case, known as the Star Seed. However, doing so activates a countdown, warning that unless a four-digit password is inputted promptly, Joy could dissolve into nothingness.
In an unexpected turn of events, it’s the Doctor who appears through the door next. The Future Doctor shares a secret code with the Current Doctor, enabling him to disable the bomb. However, the Future Doctor snatches Joy and heads towards the Time Hotel, instructing the Current Doctor to figure out a solution to disconnect the time loop while he waits in the room.
After he vanishes, the Current Physician attempts to chase him out of the room, yet upon exiting, the doorway leads merely to a solid brick wall. It dawns on him that another entryway into the Time Hotel won’t open until exactly a year from now at the Exeter Hotel in New York City.
A year in the life of the Doctor
At Sandringham, the Doctor secures employment and lodging. For a year, he diligently cleans and serves tables, residing in his quarters and continually drawing the celestial seed. During this time, he forms a close bond with the receptionist, Anita.
A full year passes, and at the appointed time, he and Anita exchange heartfelt farewells before he departs for the Exeter Hotel. Once able to step across the threshold, he assumes the role of Future Doctor, entering Joy’s hotel room and providing himself with a code that allows him to travel through into the Time Hotel.
Joy enters a trance and begins searching for something. It’s discovered that they are seeking the correct time period, as the briefcase contains a star destined to mature into an energy source. The case needs to be placed in the right time frame, develop over millennia, and then retrieved from another time period in the future.
Joy’s heartbreaking loss is revealed
The Physician persistently trails Joy, attempting to shatter her enchantment. To achieve this, he performs an abhorrent act. He provokes her, asserting that her hotel suite, “the most wretched, solitary, sorrowful room in existence,” mirrors her personality.
She finally snaps, telling him that the reason she’s alone is because her mum died during the Covid pandemic, and that she couldn’t even be around to say goodbye and had to talk to her on an iPad. Since her mum died alone on Christmas, she vowed to always spend Christmas Day alone, too.
All of a sudden, she glances down and notices that she’s no longer gripping the briefcase. The Doctor wraps his arms around her, explaining that he needed to provoke her anger in order to rouse her from her state.
After regaining consciousness, they discover themselves in what seems like a jungle-themed room. Taking advantage of this moment, The Doctor delves into investigating the situation at hand. Intriguingly, he identifies that the device was crafted by Villengard – the universally renowned arms manufacturer you might recall from Season 14.
He learns they want to make a star because it can serve as their own customizable energy source. Even if it explodes on Earth and kills everything and everyone, they won’t care. The Doctor works out that they’re currently in a room from 65 million years ago, and lo and behold, a dinosaur soon turns up and causes chaos.
In simpler terms, the object is being kept safe (or protected) during this specific time frame, with the star becoming accessible or active later on. Upon leaving the room, The Doctor and Joy search for this protective casing around 65 million years from now, once the star has become ready.
Joy makes a sacrifice
Upon returning to our temporary abode, my Sonic Screwdriver hums with purpose. A message arrives from Trev, an entity now embodied in a star seed, who regrettably has transitioned beyond life. He warns us that the situation is on the verge of explosion, and we hasten towards Room 48, the location where the mystery lies.
Within the room lies a shrine containing something buried deep within. With only four and a half minutes left before it explodes, the Doctor hastily exits in search of a rope (grabbing one from climbers on Mount Everest). Meanwhile, back at the shrine, Joy slips into a trance once more. She reassures the star that all will be well, and expresses her wish for its survival.
When the good doctor reappears, I find myself in a desolate nighttime desert, with the shrine now shattered open. Upon entering, I encounter Joy, bathed in starlight that seems to have fused with her very essence, alongside the spirits of those who shared the mysterious briefcase. She shares that the star will soon blossom, ascending far beyond our reach, ensuring no harm can come from it. She asserts she’s not perishing – she’s evolving, becoming a celestial beacon that will radiate across all realms, forever shining.
Having bid my farewells, she ascended towards the heavens, whereupon a celestial light ignited, instilling optimism across generations. In contemporary London, I found myself gazing upward, my heart skipping a beat as my birth mother’s voice echoed through my phone call. Meanwhile, back at the Sandringham Hotel, Anita received an invitation to join the Time Hotel staff, all thanks to a nod from the Doctor.
In the year 2020, London was where Joy found herself on an iPad, bidding farewell to her mother. Following their conversation’s end, her mother gazed at a star, realizing it was Joy all along, and then she became engrossed in the same celestial body.
Ultimately, the Doctor gazes at the celestial body overhead, brimming with emotion. It suddenly dawns on him that he’s in Bethlehem during the year 0001. Remarkably, his elation was none other than the “Joy to the World”.
Joy to the World is available to stream on Disney+ or BBC iPlayer now.
