As a gamer who’s been through numerous anime adaptations and reboots, I can confidently say that the anticipation for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 is reaching a fever pitch! While I wasn’t part of the initial following, the sheer success of this series has certainly piqued my interest. The first season was a pleasant surprise, and I can’t wait to delve deeper into the intriguing world of Jinshi and Maomao.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 is one of the most anticipated anime of January 2025. 

As a dedicated fan, I never thought the first season, premiering in 2023, would become such a sensation. Although the original novel and manga had a devoted domestic fanbase, their international popularity wasn’t as massive as this unexpected hit turned out to be.

2024 saw this book fly off shelves at an astounding pace, claiming the top spot on Oricon’s chart as Japan’s best-selling novel of the year, having moved more than one million copies. The series came in a close second in 2023 with over 400,000 units sold.

As a gamer, I can’t contain my excitement! Ever since the thrilling finale of our favorite series back in March, I’ve been on pins and needles, waiting for its comeback. It’s finally happening at the start of the new year—can’t wait to dive back into the game world!

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 release date

Season 2 will start airing in Japan on January 10, 2025, at 11pm (JST).

Simultaneously with the Japanese airing, streaming platforms plan to make their episodes accessible (often within a few hours following the Japanese debut).

How to watch The Apothecary Diaries Season 2

Crunchyroll has announced that they will begin streaming anime series across regions such as North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and the Commonwealth of Independent States starting from January 10. However, they have not specified the exact broadcasting time as yet.

It also confirmed it plans to dub the series in English, Spanish (Latin American), Portuguese (Brazilian), French and German. Dubbed versions will be released at a later date.

Netflix makes the series accessible in countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan (with Japan receiving it after its TV broadcast). Initially, only the first season can be watched using the original Japanese audio, while future seasons may continue this approach.

What to expect in Season 2

The upcoming season will continue from where Season 1 ended, which covered the first two volumes of the novel. This means we’ll delve into Volume 3’s storyline. One plot point in this volume involves Jinshi trying to gain backing to educate servants on reading and writing. Simultaneously, Maomao will be probing unusual occurrences connected to power struggles within the royal court.

In addition, Maomao acquires further knowledge regarding the Empress Dowager and a supposed “malediction” she is rumored to possess. However, it’s the much-anticipated “frog scene” that has fans in an uproar, where Maomao inadvertently discovers crucial information about Jinshi as their bond deepens.

The episode count for the new season hasn’t been revealed yet. Considering the first one took one cour (around 12 episodes) to adapt one book, the new episodes should follow a similar pacing. That means that if it runs again for two cours, Volume 4 should also be adapted.

In a shift of roles, Norihiro Naganuma, originally responsible for both writing and directing the first season, will now focus solely on being the head writer. Meanwhile, Akimi Fudesaka, who worked as an assistant to Naganuma, steps up to take over the director’s position. With the main cast and crew staying consistent, fans can anticipate that the animation’s quality will remain unchanged.

Lilas Ikuta, the singer of YOASOBI, will be performing the new opening theme song titled ‘Hyakkaryoran.’ Since previous YOASOBI anime themes like those for ‘Oshi no Ko’ season 1 and ‘Gundam: Witch from Mercury’ Cour 1 have gained significant popularity, it’s expected that this performance will also generate interest in the upcoming season.
