As an admirer of Bowen Yang, I must say that his performance as the drone on Saturday Night Live was nothing short of extraordinary. His ability to bring humor and depth to such an unusual character is truly commendable. The way he cleverly addressed the stereotypes and prejudices associated with drones, while also subtly commenting on societal issues, was simply brilliant.
Towards the end of the year, during the last episode of “Saturday Night Live,” cast member Bowen Yang dressed up as a drone that has been seen in New Jersey’s skies. This, Michael Che clarified, led the Federal Aviation Administration to impose “temporary airspace restrictions” over the state.
“Wow, indoors,” Yang said as the drone. “Different.”
“So, how are you?” asked Che. “Or should I say, what are you?”
Yang responded, “No, actually, we’re not planning on doing that. I am clear about who I am, and I don’t feel the need to justify myself to anyone, ever.
“Okay, but who’s controlling you?” said Che.
Who is in charge of you, Michael?” Yang retorted. “People keep asking if it’s a UFO, a drone, or promotional material for SNL 50. Meanwhile, I’m simply going about my own affairs, floating above people’s homes and possibly recording them.
Hey there, I see you’re in New Jersey,” said Che. “Well, to be honest, I often wonder the same about myself being here!” replied Yang. “You know, it’s not just about the stereotypes, but rather the stunning natural beauty and excellent educational institutions that draw people in! I guess I was about to crack a ‘Sopranos’ joke, but let me assure you, there’s much more to this place than that. People choose to live here for genuine reasons.
“They’re saying these sightings are just manned aircrafts,” said Che.
Yang inquired, “So, what’s all this fuss about whether I’m manned or not? Just to clarify, I have the ability to be with a man whenever I choose. Rest assured, that aspect is taken care of. Whether I’m manned or unmanned, I find a way to make things work.
Yang went on to say, ‘Feel free to inquire about my romantic preferences. To put it simply, I’m drawn to helicopters. They appeal to me because they share some traits with me, yet they are larger and more boisterous. Plus, they often appear on TV shows. For your information, I’m currently courting the helicopter used in ‘Succession’, if you’re curious.’
Later on, Yang lamented about being targeted with laser beams and avoiding children’s presence. “I truly resonate with Elphaba,” he expressed, referring to the character from “Wicked” – a musical where he also performs. Consequently, he broke into a drone-themed adaptation of “Defying Gravity”, even incorporating green illumination. “Very well, I’ll play the antagonist. You seek me, it’s me!” Yang exclaimed, echoing lyrics from the powerful song in the popular movie.
If you want to locate me, gaze upon the sky over New Jersey!” Yang sang enthusiastically. “No one, anywhere in New Jersey, not even a past or future Bethany, will succeed in bringing me down!
Martin Short is the episode’s host with Hozier as musical guest.
