“That seemed to have run its course.” Michael Weatherly almost left network TV because of NCIS

As a fan who has followed Michael Weatherly‘s career for years, I must say his journey from NCIS to Bull was quite intriguing. It seemed like he was yearning for a change, much like a fish longing for the sea after spending too much time in a tank.

To NCIS viewers, Michael Weatherly is recognized as Anthony DiNozzo, a role he played extensively over the years, making him a staple figure on network television. The constant commitment to his work on the set of such a high-profile show eventually became overwhelming for the actor, pushing him close to the brink of having to retire from network TV productions altogether, largely due to his involvement with NCIS.

Over time, devotees had to bid farewell to an emblematic character, and Weatherly himself was contemplating parting ways with television as well, having finished his stint on NCIS. He found that the rigorous nature of TV series, particularly in the long term, made him hesitant about embarking on a similar project.

In an interview with TV Guide, the actor admitted that upon leaving NCIS, he had been contemplating seeking out fresh opportunities beyond what he felt the crime TV series no longer offered him. He also expressed doubt about finding such challenges in any other television program.

I grew so accustomed to Tony DiNozzo on NCIS, but when it felt like our shared journey was nearing its end, I began to crave something new. I thought perhaps this longing stemmed from me entering a new phase of life, desiring diverse experiences. And sadly, NCIS didn’t seem to offer that fresh adventure I sought.

To be completely honest, I was yearning for a shift, but I hadn’t quite figured out what form that change would take. Frankly, I never imagined it would be another prime-time network drama series – the schedule is grueling, and I’ve been on that treadmill for the past sixteen years. truthfully, it wasn’t rest I craved, but something fresh and exciting to stir my creative juices.

As a gamer, I’ve always been open to new challenges, but my focus was on a particular role, much like NCIS. However, when the offer for Bull came knocking, it was a complete change of pace. I hesitated initially, given the rigors of TV commitments, but the script for Bull intrigued me. It seemed like an opportunity to showcase my acting skills in a fresh and exciting way. So, despite initial reservations, I decided to give the small screen another go.
