As a seasoned documentary enthusiast who’s seen more true-crime tales than I care to remember, I must say that ABC News Studios’ latest offering, “Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder – A Special Edition of 20/20,” piques my interest. With a career spanning decades and a soft spot for investigative journalism, I can’t help but be drawn to the intricate web of facts and emotions that such documentaries weave.
It appears that ABC News could potentially lead the pack in producing a documentary special focusing on the murder of Luigi Mangione, the CEO who was allegedly shot. According to our sources, ABC News Studios is planning to air a one-hour special titled “Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder — A Special Edition of 20/20” on Thursday, December 19 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
The unique production, set to stream the following day on Hulu, incorporates a one-of-a-kind audio recording of Mangione sharing insights about his Asian journeys, as stated by the studio.
In this one-hour documentary, we delve into a captivating tale that gripped the nation’s attention, offering a comprehensive, real-time exploration of the chilling assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The aftermath saw an unexpected surge in social media support for the suspected killer, transforming him into a symbol of heroism for some. Additionally, we will air previously unheard audio recordings of Luigi Mangione, revealing his voice to the nation on prime-time TV. This special also sheds light on the manhunt for the suspect, delves into potential motives behind Mangione’s alleged actions, and presents fresh insights from investigators about writings discovered in Mangione’s backpack, which are being labeled as a handwritten confession critical of the healthcare system. Furthermore, we examine the chilling inscription found on the spent shell casings.
Over the past few days, numerous unscripted projects have been initiated based on Thompson’s murder case and accusations against Mangione. This week alone, ABC News Studios has announced its fourth project related to this story, following news that Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions are developing a documentary, as well as a project from Stephen Robert Morse, the director of “Amanda Knox” documentary, and an Investigation Discovery special titled “Who Is Luigi Mangione?” scheduled to air in February.
In “Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder – A Special Edition of 20/20,” the interviews will feature individuals who are acquainted with the suspect, along with Brad Garrett from ABC News, a former FBI profiler; Aaron Katersky, senior investigative correspondent at ABC News; Brian Buckmire, defense attorney and legal contributor at ABC News; Josh Margolin, chief investigative reporter at ABC News; and Josh Einiger, reporter from WABC.
This special program hails from ABC News Studios, under the leadership of executive producers Muriel Pearson, David Sloan, and “20/20’s” Janice Johnston. Below is an exclusive sneak peek at the trailer for this special:
