As a cinephile who appreciates the unique blend of creativity and technical prowess in filmmaking, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Obex” at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by the multi-talented Albert Birney, this black and white fantasy film promises to be a mind-bending journey that seamlessly intertwines reality with digital worlds – something I’ve always found intriguing in his work.
The company “Magnify” has obtained the global distribution rights for the movie “Obex,” prior to its debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. This production, helmed by and featuring Albert Birney, who is known for films like “Sylvio” and “Strawberry Mansion”, is Birney’s initial live-action directorial project. It’s a black-and-white fantasy film.
The movie, penned by Birney and Pete Ohs, narrates the story of Connor Marsh (played by Birney), a solitary man residing with his pet dog Sandy. One fateful day, he starts playing the high-tech game called Obex. When Sandy mysteriously disappears, the boundary between reality and the game becomes hazy, forcing Conor to embark on an adventure into the enigmatic realm of Obex to retrieve her.
Lorna Lee, SVP of Global Sales at Magnify, described this as an extraordinary and whimsical adventure across dimensions – a rollercoaster ride brimming with marvels, intriguing figures, and exhilaration throughout. She expressed great enthusiasm about promoting the emotionally resonant, amusing, and imaginative films of Albert Birney.
Beyond his role as a director for six movies, Birney also worked as an animator on the film “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” directed by Jane Schoenbrun, and appeared in the movie “I Saw the TV Glow” under her direction as well.
Birney shared that ‘Obex’ holds a special place in his heart, and he’s thrilled about collaborating with Magnify to reach audiences who share the same passion for this film.
The project is a production by James Belfer for Cartuna, representing the third joint effort between Cartuna and Birney since “Sylvio” and “Strawberry Mansion.” Leyline will be involved in the production alongside Birney, with Emma Hannaway and screenwriter Pete Ohs taking on additional producer roles.
The film stars Birney, Callie Hernandez, and Frank Mosley.
