As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for musicals and a soft spot for Amanda Seyfried, I must say that her recent viral video singing “Popular” from “Wicked” has certainly stirred up quite the buzz! Despite initial speculation that it was her audition tape for Glinda, Seyfried has clarified that it was merely a fun moment during a Lancôme shoot.
Amanda Seyfried became a hot topic on social media following the release of “Wicked” in cinemas, due to a viral video of her performing “Popular”, one of the musical’s fan-favorite songs. The video sparked rumors that it was Seyfried trying out for the role of Glinda, but she has since clarified in an interview with People magazine that this is not the case.
During the COVID period, I was involved in a Lancôme photoshoot in Long Island City. My stylist at the time was Elizabeth Stewart. At that moment, I wasn’t auditioning for ‘Wicked’, but I knew it was approaching. So, I was just being casual and remarked, “This dress reminds me of Glinda.” Elizabeth encouraged me to go ahead and do it, and later she posted about it somewhere.
Emily Seyfried admitted that perhaps it wasn’t ideal to share the video, but emphasized that it was simply a playful, backstage glimpse from her Lancôme photoshoot. Known for her roles in the “Mamma Mia!” films and “Les Misérables,” Seyfried is no stranger to the world of movie musicals. Although the viral clip wasn’t actually her audition for “Wicked,” she did try out for the part, with Ariana Grande eventually landing the role of Glinda in the film.
Seyfried expressed that she gave her all during the ‘Wicked’ audition, and it was indeed a drawn-out procedure. She also added, ‘Everything unfolds as it should.’
Seyfried praised the “Wicked” movie as “fantastic,” stating that it suits Grande’s style perfectly, adding that her children have been constantly playing the soundtrack and everything seems perfectly in place.
In a conversation with Backstage last July, Seyfried admitted that securing a role as Glinda in “Wicked” was a top priority for her following her dissatisfaction with her vocal performance in “Les Misérables.
At one point, Seyfried expressed that she harbored the dream of continuing auditions for ‘Wicked.’ She felt this experience helped her recognize how much she’d grown as a singer, and it fueled her desire to prove herself. Since ‘Les Mis,’ she had been driven by the thought, ‘I need to be better. I need to do better.’ So, whatever musical projects come my way next, I am now ready.
Regarding Grande securing the role of Glinda in the movie, it’s worth noting that the Grammy-winning artist has frequently expressed in interviews her longstanding desire to portray this character, as she had dreamt of doing so ever since she was a little girl.
Upon discovering it could potentially occur, I immediately informed my team, ‘Please stay vigilant. I need you to be ready, and I understand that this needs to be earned.’ So when you notice individuals, may I please join? I’m willing to do anything,” Grande shared with Paul Mescal during the EbMaster’s “Actors on Actors” series. “I worked diligently with a vocal coach and an acting coach to prepare, as Glinda’s vocal track differs significantly from what I typically sing.
Ariana Grande is presently a strong contender for receiving a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination due to her performance in “Wicked.” This movie is being screened across various theaters, provided by Universal Pictures nationwide.
