As a dedicated gamer with years of gaming experience under my belt, I must admit that this year’s Game Awards left me with a bittersweet feeling, much like a lost game of Jenga. The anticipation was high, the competition fierce, and the outcome, well, it wasn’t quite what I expected.
Following Black Myth: Wukong‘s apparent slight at The Game Awards 2024, the game’s director voiced criticism towards the event.
2024 saw an incredible leap in gaming, peaking at The Game Awards. However, similar to other years, there’s been some debate about the ultimate winner. In the end, Astrobot emerged victorious, claiming the prestigious Game of the Year title.
At the awards show, Black Myth: Wukong was among the nominees for Game of the Year. We felt it deserved a bit more recognition, given its impressive performance. For their debut title, Game Science created a game that quickly became the second most-played on Steam at the time of its release, garnering massive popularity within hours.
The developers responsible for creating Black Myth: Wukong seem to have felt quite disappointed, as they were highly confident about their game but didn’t win the major award at the Game Awards. In response, the director and CEO of Game Science, Feng Ji, expressed his dissatisfaction on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, voicing concerns over the criteria used for selecting the winners.

Black Myth: Wukong devs shed tears over GOTY loss
Regardless of not winning the Game of the Year, Black Myth: Wukong made a significant impact at this year’s Game Awards, earning nominations across five distinct categories such as Best Game Direction. Moreover, it clinched victories in both the Best Action-Adventure category and the Player’s Choice award.
Despite the differences, Black Myth: Wukong’s Director Feng Ji expressed continued dissatisfaction, as a post from the CEO clarified. “I must confess that there are feelings of disappointment and regret,” Feng explained. “The games nominated this year are all outstanding, but I simply can’t grasp the criteria for this year’s Game of the Year. It feels like I came here for no reason!
The developer openly shared that he had penned an acceptance speech for Game of the Year two years prior, reflecting his strong belief in the game’s potential to triumph. He admitted to feeling somewhat frustrated when his confidence was not reciprocated by others and in response to the uproar from players following the awards ceremony.
At the Game Awards, Alanah Pearce, who used to write for Sony Santa Monica and was present at the event, observed that the creators of Black Myth: Wukong appeared sad during the ceremony itself. “It’s quite unusual because when they didn’t win, the Wukong team were visibly crying,” she commented during a live broadcast. In simpler terms, she noted that they were clearly disappointed and upset when they didn’t win the award.

Despite not winning 2024’s Game of the Year award, Black Myth: Wukong was still a major commercial success. The developers are also working on DLC for the game.
With Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion setting a new standard, I can’t help but feel a renewed sense of hope that Game Science might just clinch the grand prize again.
