As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that navigating the vast universe of Marvel Super War has been quite the adventure. With its diverse roster of characters, each with their unique abilities and playstyles, it’s a game that truly tests one’s strategic acumen.
Marvel Rivals offers a multitude of characters – both heroes and villains – that are all based on its rich comic book lore. Understanding which ones counteract each other could be crucial in determining whether you win or lose.
Characters in Marvel Rivals are categorized into three groups: Duelists, Strategists, and Vanguards. Duelists prioritize dealing high damage over everything else, often forgoing durability and supportive abilities to inflict maximum harm on the opposing team.
Vanguard characters often lead battles with higher health and shield capabilities compared to characters from other classes. They also possess a greater variety of defensive abilities. On the other hand, Strategists offer additional support features such as boosting team attack power or healing severe injuries in combat.
Here’s everything you need to know about who to pick up to directly counter the enemy roster.

Marvel Rivals counters explained
Adam Warlock
Overcoming Adam Warlock victoriously primarily involves nipping him in the bud swiftly, as quick elimination is key. Characters with an accessible striking range, such as Squirrel Girl, are generally a prudent pick, while characters like Magneto, who offer ample protection and disruption, also prove effective.
Black Panther
In handling Black Panther, there are two strategies open to you. Based on your preferred approach, you might opt for engaging him from a distance or going toe-to-toe with robust frontline characters such as Groot and Venom.
Black Widow
As a fan, I’d say Black Widow is a formidable champion with a high skill ceiling, meaning her effectiveness relies heavily on the player’s control. Her potent damage is delivered from afar, so if you’re playing a nimble character who’s tricky to corner, you can effectively counter her strengths. Characters like Spider-Man are perfect for this role, but any hero who can dodge and weave out of sight, even below the map, can thwart Black Widow efficiently.
Captain America
It’s undeniable that Captain America, both in comics and films, is a fighter through and through. However, given the right strategy, he can be countered effectively. His shortage of swift distance-closing moves makes him vulnerable at longer ranges, especially since his small shield doesn’t compensate for the lower health reserves he has compared to other Vanguard characters.
Cloak and Dagger
Just as Adam Warlock benefits from having some flexibility in his abilities, Cloak and Dagger also thrive when given room to utilize their tools fully. This freedom, however, leaves them vulnerable to champions who can bridge gaps swiftly or move erratically.
Doctor Strange
As a devoted Marvel fan, I must admit that Doctor Strange is undeniably one of the toughest characters in Marvel Rivals when it comes to match-ups. Facing him can be quite an engaging challenge due to his formidable abilities. If you’re considering an opponent, your best strategy would typically be with tanky Vanguards who can absorb the brunt of his powerful impacts, or heroes who prefer close combat and can disrupt his output effectively.
Groot
As a gamer, let me tell you from my experience, Groot’s no pushover, being an anthropomorphic tree and all. However, there are some strategies that work effectively against him. For those who prefer dueling, it’s wise to choose range-focused characters. On the other hand, Vanguard players have the advantage with heavy hitters like Magneto. He can take as much damage as Groot, and even dish out more, making him a formidable opponent in close combat.
Hawkeye
Approaching Hawkeye can be quite challenging without sustaining significant damage, so it’s advisable to make things tough for the player controlling him. Loki is a superb choice because he’s elusive and hard to catch, while robust Vanguard characters should have enough durability to break through his defenses and disrupt his impact on the battlefield.
Hela
Choosing the right characters becomes crucial when facing Hela since she’s a tough rival for many top champions. It’s especially beneficial to have Ranged Duelists on your team, while Strategists like everyone’s favorite nuisance, Jeff the Land Shark, can neutralize several of her abilities effectively.
Hulk
Although the Hulk may not have any surprising abilities, he’s incredibly powerful and tough to defeat. Therefore, it’s wise to choose a weapon that inflicts maximum damage, ideally from a distance. Among our favorites for such situations is The Punisher.
Iron Fist
The Iron Fist character has left a strong impression on the community due to his impressive abilities. However, it’s crucial to find ways to soften his most destructive traits. For tacticians, characters like Loki and Mantis are recommended because they excel at evading damage and controlling opponents in a broader sense. In this particular scenario, Peni Parker might be the optimal choice overall; however, keep in mind that using her may limit your effectiveness against other champions.
Iron Man
In most matches of Marvel Rivals, Iron Man’s consistent flying ability makes close combat heroes like Hulk or Captain America less effective. At present, Hawkeye, The Punisher, and Doctor Strange are the best options to deal with Iron Man, as they are likely to overcome Tony Stark quickly.
Jeff the Land Shark
Despite his adorable exterior, Jeff the Land Shark is currently one of the top choices for the game. Tough characters tend to fare well against him due to his lack of rapid damage output, prolonging the fight. On the other hand, melee powerhouses like Wolverine can quickly defeat him if they manage to get close.
Loki
The Norse Trickster God is incredibly difficult to defeat due to his vast array of unpredictable abilities, which often confound the ordinary player. It’s advisable to rely on champions who can counter or subdue him, as they offer the best chance of success. Characters such as Venom are effective at striking first before he has a chance to respond.
Luna Snow
In this scenario, Luna Snow won’t be directly engaging in combat, but her presence can potentially support the entire enemy team. Therefore, it’s crucial to eliminate her. To achieve this, you might want to use a character with a good range or one that can safely and swiftly dive into the back line of enemies. If you do so, it could make dealing with Luna quite straightforward.
Magik
In many instances, it’s wise to keep melee-focused Marvel Rivals heroes at bay. Magik falls into this category as well, and The Punisher is a great choice for dealing with her from a distance. If you don’t have The Punisher, consider using characters like Squirrel Girl who can easily reach and defeat Magik before she gets too close.
Magneto
Although Magneto is quite formidable in his own league, he’s currently one of the simplest characters to challenge. Vanguard players must focus on having high durability to withstand him, while Duelists might prefer quick and agile heroes like Spider-Man. Additionally, cunning strategists are effective against him too, so it’s important to have a variety of such options ready during the draft phase.
Mantis
Mantis stands out as an unusual champion because her significant contributions are often less conspicuous compared to typical supports or attackers. Tanks usually find it straightforward to handle her, so consider teaming up with a character like Groot or Hulk, and you’ll likely be able to disregard her for the majority of the game.
Moon Knight
Moon Knight is somewhat mysterious and isn’t being utilized extensively at the moment, which might be due to several heroes being able to outmaneuver him in the current setup. Black Widow and Hela are particularly formidable in one-on-one encounters, while Captain America finds it relatively easy to handle Moon Knight’s abilities.
Namor
Namor generally holds his own in most areas, and there’s no single hero who significantly weakens his gameplay. However, choosing characters capable of dealing high damage would be a smart move, as Black Widow and Hela are particularly skilled in this regard.
Peni Parker
Peni Parker is a weird one to counter directly against because she doesn’t do anything particularly outlandish that needs addressing. Her high health pool is her greatest strength, so go with any of the big damage Duelists in the table and all will be well the next time you meet.
Psylocke
When facing Psylocke, it’s crucial to be aware of various effective counters. Regardless of your preferred role, you should be able to identify a suitable tactic. Strategists tend to excel at nullifying her main abilities, while skilled Duelists can also swiftly take her down.
The Punisher
As a gamer, let me tell you, The Punisher is undeniably the top long-range pick in Marvel Rivals. Closing in on him for a takedown can feel like an uphill struggle. Tanky characters are a wise choice, as they can withstand his firepower. High mobility options also prove effective, but it’s tough to land hits unless you’re one of the best players out there.
Rocket Raccoon
One of Rocket’s key strengths lies in his small size, making it tough to land accurate ranged attacks consistently on high-skill heroes. A more effective strategy would be to choose powerful melee characters like Black Panther. However, I must admit, I can’t fathom the desire to defeat such a cute creature as Rocket.
Scarlet Witch
Among the characters currently available, it’s generally agreed that Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful. However, in the current game dynamics (meta), she seems less effective than expected. Her range works against her, as opponents like Jeff the Land Shark and Venom can approach without being vulnerable, potentially exploiting her weak spots.
Spider-Man
Spider-Man can be challenging to master in Marvel Rivals, but once you’ve got a handle on his movement skills, you’ll have a significant advantage over most other heroes. Characters like Venom, Scarlet Witch, and The Punisher are particularly effective against him due to their ability to corner and defeat Spider-Man swiftly when he’s off guard.
Squirrel Girl
In the initial stages of the game, Squirrel Girl significantly disrupted the meta, but since then, balance has been restored, and due to limited mobility, she becomes more manageable to counter. High-damage or long-range abilities tend to prevail, while the toughest characters in the game should be able to withstand most of her attacks.
Star-Lord
Star-Lord offers players an appealing blend of easy accessibility and advanced mastery potential, yet he struggles against several characters in the current lineup. Characters like Doctor Strange, Peni Parker, Loki, Luna Snow, and Jeff the Land Shark significantly hinder his effectiveness in combat.
Storm
It seems that Storm is currently being underestimated, yet much of the conversation revolves around how simple it is to counteract her, rather than her actual abilities. A variety of choices from all three character classes are effective against her, such as Doctor Strange, Adam Warlock, and Hawkeye. To avoid getting caught by her major powers, it’s best to keep your distance.
Thor
From a fan’s perspective, I’d say the God of Thunder can be quite formidable when unleashed, but he offers a unique challenge that makes him one of the earlier heroes to master. If you’re looking for an effective counter, Doctor Strange is an excellent choice due to his robust health, damage output, flight capabilities, agility, and defensive mitigation. These traits should provide you with the tools needed to offset Thor’s strengths.
Venom
It’s hard to find a character that can effectively challenge Venom at this point in the game; it’s almost as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack. To even the odds, we’ve opted for characters with ranged abilities and those with tank-like durability, along with some unpredictable choices like Jeff the Land Shark to keep things interesting.
Winter Soldier
In simpler terms, Winter Soldier is a formidable fighter in close combat who can create issues from behind enemy lines. If you aim to eliminate him early, any character with ranged abilities should suffice. Otherwise, Adam Warlock effectively controls his aggressive actions, and you can generally recover from the damage he inflicts.
Wolverine
To effectively use Wolverine’s limited set of tools, he must get extremely close to the adversary. However, if he does, he becomes incredibly destructive, so it’s crucial to take all necessary measures to prevent this. Keep range on your side, as it will help you initiate combat from a distance and accumulate kills earlier in the fight.
