As a long-time fan of Yellowstone, I must say that the series finale has left me reeling – and not just because I’m still recovering from the shock of John Dutton’s demise. The brutal and abrupt death of Jamie Dutton at his sister Beth’s hands was certainly unexpected, though perhaps not entirely unpredictable given their turbulent relationship.
Over the course of only six episodes, Taylor Sheridan has ended the lives of several unaware Yellowstone characters, but the demise of a character in the series finale has left viewers with a sour taste (Be advised: major spoilers follow!).
After honoring John Dutton, Sarah Atwood, and Colby Mayfield, we now find ourselves preparing to add another unexpected demise to the tragic tally of characters from Yellowstone.
In the climactic episode of Yellowstone’s fifth season, I found myself deeply moved by the heart-wrenching turn of events: my beloved character, Jamie Dutton, met an unexpected end at the hands of his relentless sibling, Beth.
The manner of Jamie’s demise was grim, yet it wasn’t entirely shocking. From the very beginning, the intense rivalry between Jamie and Beth had been a significant source of tension, leading many to speculate that their storyline would culminate in Beth exacting revenge on Jamie for John’s murder. Nevertheless, this didn’t deter fans from expressing frustration.
Yellowstone fans furious over Jamie’s death
Although many anticipated that Jamie would perish in the final episode, they still believed it was unjust to such a character who didn’t deserve such an ending. In truth, it was Jamie’s girlfriend, Sarah Atwood, who initiated John’s assassination, not Jamie himself.
However, Beth’s fury didn’t hold her back from bursting into John’s home following his funeral, assaulting Jamie and pepper-spraying him with bear repellent. A massive fight ensued between them, culminating in Beth stabbing Jamie in the abdomen while Rip tried to restrain him.
A sorrowful conclusion befell a character filled with sorrow, yearning all along to demonstrate his greatness beyond the family that nurtured him and exploited him.
A user on Reddit commented, “I never harbored hate towards Jamie nor viewed him as the antagonist, but I felt a strong frustration with Taylor’s portrayal of him. If he was intended to be a despicable character, why did I find myself sympathizing with him and annoyed that his actions didn’t match the level of wickedness displayed by the ‘good’ characters in the show?
They both felt disappointed about the show. One mentioned that although he wasn’t originally portrayed as a villain, Sheridan unexpectedly turned him into one towards the end. The other commented that his character didn’t deserve such an unfair and brutal ending.
Another remarked that it was unfortunate how Beth received a positive conclusion to her story. After all, she’s not exactly an admirable character. Jamie, with his imperfections, was never portrayed as the antagonist. He had a strategy to preserve 95% of the ranch for Tate, his children, and future generations, but John and Beth, driven by their avarice, couldn’t let go of the remaining 10%. Jamie deserved a more fitting conclusion than being cast into that pit. It was a disappointing resolution.
