‘Kraven the Hunter’ Makes Modest Debut as ‘Her Story’ Maintains Lead at Sluggish China Box Office

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of watching movies under my belt, I must say that the Chinese box office scene is truly captivating this week. The consistent success of “Her Story” is a testament to the power of storytelling from a female perspective and the universal themes it touches upon.

For four weekends straight, “Her Story,” a comedic-dramatic film primarily focusing on women’s viewpoints, produced by Maxtime Pictures, has been the top-grossing movie in mainland China.

Even with some fresh films hitting the screens, ticket sales stayed slow, as “Moana 2” slid out of the top 5 rankings, while Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” had a relatively low opening weekend.

According to Artisan Gateway’s data, the movie “Her Story” experienced a decrease in earnings, raking in approximately RMB52.1 million ($7.3 million) over the weekend following its previous one. The film has now amassed a total of $89 million in China. As per Comscore’s figures, it was ranked seventh among the highest-grossing international films globally.

The film titled “Her Story” was helmed by Shao Yihui, also known for his work in “B For Busy” (2021). This fast-paced narrative revolves around two central characters – a recently jobless single mother and her enigmatic new neighbor, who seems to harbor more troubles than is immediately evident. As their friendship blossoms, they bravely confront diverse relationship hurdles, such as an abusive ex-spouse and fresh romantic prospects.

In its debut, “The Last Dance,” produced by Emperor Motion Pictures, earned $5.9 million to take the second spot at the box office. Including previews, its total earnings amount to $9.7 million. This film, directed by emerging Hong Kong director Anselm Chan, tells the story of a struggling wedding planner and a rigid Taoist priest who form an unlikely duo in the funeral business. The movie features a star-studded cast led by renowned Cantonese comedians Dayo Wong (“Table for Six”) and Michael Hui (“Security Unlimited,” “Where the Wind Blows”).

In the third spot, the action-drama “The Prosecutor” starring Donnie Yen, produced by Maoyan Pictures, has earned $7.8 million in previews before its December 27 release. In this movie, action legend Donnie Yen plays Fok Chi Ho, a former top police special forces officer who switches to working in the courtroom as a prosecutor. Fok’s character takes on the case of Ma Ka Kit (emerging star Mason Fung), a troubled young man facing drug trafficking charges. Despite some dubious circumstances, Ma is forced into a plea deal resulting in a severe sentence. Moved by his gut feelings, Fok delves deeper into the case, revealing a complex conspiracy that connects Hong Kong’s criminal underworld and its influential figures of power.

In its fourth week of release, “I Am What I Am 2,” the follow-up to last year’s popular animated film, raked in $3.7 million over the weekend, bringing its total earnings to $4.6 million when previews are included. Directed by Sun Haipeng, this movie tells the story of a young man named A Juan, who sets out from his small-town home for the city in search of funds for his father’s medical care. His journey takes him through grueling training and eventually leads him to compete in the Shanghai Fight Night kickboxing competition.

In the fifth spot, we find “Burning Stars” by Dimension Films, earning $2.7 million this weekend and a grand total of $13 million over its two-week run. This film, helmed by Xu Zhanxiong (known for “Sea of Stars,” winner of the Golden Rooster award, as well as “The Pioneer” and “Wild Grass” recipient of the Golden Crane award), is a historical fiction action-drama. The story unfolds around a team of young students who undertake a clandestine mission, serving as decoys to execute an evacuation operation. The talented cast includes Roy Wang (“Ray of Light”), Sophie Zhang (“She’s Got No Name”), Connor Leong (“Song of Life”) and Li Chen (“Bureau 749”).

In the box office rankings provided by Ent Group, Disney’s “Moana 2” slipped down to sixth place, bringing in $2.4 million and a total of $13.6 million so far. Meanwhile, Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” debuted at number eight, earning $1.2 million according to the same source.

Over the past weekend, the country’s total box office earnings amounted to $33.9 million. To date this year, the accumulated earnings have reached an impressive $5.79 billion. However, these figures are still lagging behind those of the same period in 2023 by a significant 21.2%.
