As a seasoned movie reviewer with a lifetime of memories etched into my mind from the golden age of cinema to the modern marvels of CGI, I must say that the return of Harry Potter to our screens fills me with a warmth akin to Ginny Weasley’s heart. Thirteen years may have passed since we bid farewell to the Boy Who Lived, but it seems that magic still lingers in the air as HBO breathes new life into this beloved universe.
After thirteen years since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” hit theaters and concluded Harry’s cinematic adventure, the world of Harry Potter is preparing to make its comeback through a series of TV episodes.
Under the guidance of showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, HBO is revisiting the enchanting universe from the popular Harry Potter books and films. The story follows young Harry Potter as he uncovers his wizard abilities, bids farewell to his ordinary family, and embarks on a journey to Hogwarts, a magical school. Throughout this adventure, Harry forms friendships with Ron and Hermione, and together they play crucial roles in a battle against the sinister Lord Voldemort, who is often referred to as “He-Who-Cannot-Be-Named.
Almost three decades following J.K. Rowling’s publication of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” a novel that was subsequently turned into a movie by Chris Columbus in 2001, a new show has emerged. This franchise, encompassing both the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” films, stands among the top four highest-grossing of all time, amassing $9.6 billion globally over 11 movies.
Here is everything we know so far about HBO’s “Harry Potter” series.
How will the show differ from the movies?
As a passionate film enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate that each of the seven books will form an entire season in the upcoming adaptation. Gardiner and Myold have expressed excitement about utilizing this opportunity to broaden the narrative scope while preserving the timeless essence of the books and films. For instance, they’ve mentioned their intentions to maintain the iconic appearance of the Great Hall, rather than alter it significantly.
They plan to delve deeply into the development of the characters within Hogwarts who received less focus in previous presentations, such as faculty members and other staff.
Will J.K. Rowling be a part of the show?
In contemporary times, one contentious aspect of the Harry Potter universe that’s sparked much debate revolves around J.K. Rowling’s public statements criticizing transgender and non-binary individuals online. Despite this, Rowling is set to take on an executive producer role in the upcoming show.
During a press conference held on November 12th, it was revealed by HBO’s head, Casey Bloys, that J.K. Rowling played an extremely active role in choosing the screenwriter and director for the project. Despite her controversial anti-trans comments, these remarks did not influence their decision to collaborate with her.
Do we know the cast yet?
Not yet! It has been reported that around 32,000 kids auditioned in Ireland and the U.K. for the lead roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. As of Dec. 5, Gardiner and Mylod were reviewing audition tapes. Their goal is to meet with shortlisted candidates in January.
In other significant roles, it’s rumored that Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”) could play Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You”) is a strong candidate for Professor Severus Snape. However, no official agreements have been finalized as the casting process is currently in its early stages.
When will the show be filmed and released?
The production for the new “Harry Potter” series by HBO will begin filming during the summer of 2025 at Leavesden, where previous movies were also shot. This much-anticipated series is scheduled to premiere on Max in the year 2026.
