As a history enthusiast and a lover of pop culture icons, I am utterly captivated by the dynamic journey of Authentic Studios. The sheer magnitude of their projects, centered around legendary figures like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, and Shaquille O’Neal, is nothing short of breathtaking.
Authentic Studios and Baz Luhrmann are discussing further details about Elvis Presley. Specifically, Luhrmann is working on a new documentary about the legendary Rock & Roll icon, focusing on previously unseen footage and recordings of Presley that he discovered during the production of his movie “Elvis.
One of several ongoing ventures at Authentic Studios, which is part of the entertainment sector within intellectual property management firm Authentic Brand Group, involves creating films and television series based on their diverse range of intellectual properties. Following the establishment of a studio division approximately two years ago, Authentic has managed to sell 14 projects to different networks or platforms.
After recognizing that they wished to accomplish more than merely licensing their intellectual property (IP), the team at Authentic decided to explore additional avenues. This IP encompasses iconic figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Muhammad Ali; living legends like Shaquille O’Neal and David Beckham; and hundreds of renowned brands including Sports Illustrated, Reebok, Juicy Couture, and Brooks Brothers.
2023 marked the start of my journey with Authentic Studios, a new venture born out of our involvement in some iconic Hollywood productions like “Elvis” from Warner Bros. Inspired by this, we decided it was time for us to step up and produce these projects ourselves.
Marc Rosen, president of Authentic Entertainment, shared that there was a high demand for our intellectual property, specifically our brands, for documentaries, movies, you name it. The revelation for us was that we should produce these projects ourselves to maintain control and reap most of the profits, instead of granting licenses to others.
In addition to other ongoing ventures, Jersey Legends is creating a documentary series showcasing Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson in their new roles as president and vice president respectively of the recently revamped Reebok basketball division, now owned by the Authentic brand.
Colin Smeeton, president of Authentic Studios, clarified that the project isn’t an advertisement. Instead, it focuses on Shaquille’s personal journey and his transformation into a successful businessman. Reebok serves as the means, and the aim is to help Reebok regain its prestigious position in Shaquille’s eyes… Here at Authentic Studios, we don’t merely produce content. We don’t simply create any show. What matters is whether Shaquille or David has a compelling story they want to share on camera, or if it’s a narrative they are passionate about.
Additionally, Authentic Productions is creating a fictional TV series based on another Authentic retail brand, Barneys New York, along with a documentary about the history of their Quiksilver surf apparel line. Meanwhile, SI Studios is collaborating with Gary Barber’s Spyglass Entertainment to produce a feature documentary and scripted series about decorated female horse racer Julie Krone.
Previously mentioned, Authentic’s SI studio is collaborating with Smokehouse Pictures and 101 Studios to produce a documentary film concerning the sexual misconduct case at Ohio State University, which was detailed in a 2020 Sports Illustrated article.
SI Studios seems to be overflowing with intellectual property, if you look at it from a historical perspective,” Smeeton commented. “It’s as if they’ve accumulated around 70 years of narratives. However, some of their most outstanding creations have emerged in the past year.
In addition to Spyglass, Authentic is collaborating with production firms such as Skydance, Mandalay, Done+Dusted, Propagate Content, and 101 Studios on various projects. These projects are being pitched at broadcasting platforms like NBC, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO.
Currently, we’re examining each of our brands and asking, ‘What captivating, amusing, and relevant narratives can we create about these brands to maintain their relevance and keep consumers interested?’, as Smeeton explains. Moreover, we’ve been the second largest IP licensee, trailing behind Disney, when it comes to iconic figures like Elvis Presley. However, we haven’t been generating our own content until now. There was a gap that needed to be filled.
Under Rosen’s leadership, the entertainment division is not only focusing on content production but also exploring various events and interactive experiences linked to the Authentic IP. For instance, an “Elvis Evolution” exhibit is planned for London next year. Rosen stated, “We’re not confined to TV or films; we’re actively creating immersive and live stage experiences in different global locations.” In the past, we were more passive, but now we are eagerly embracing opportunities wherever they arise, and these can span across any existing platform.
