Nielsen Streaming Top 10: ‘Cross’ Debuts at No. 1 With 1.3 Billion Minutes Viewed in First Four Days

As a dedicated viewer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching shows and movies across various platforms, I can confidently say that the recent success of “Cross” on Amazon Prime Video is nothing short of impressive! With its gripping narrative and the stellar performance by Aldis Hodge, it’s no wonder it topped Nielsen‘s weekly streaming rankings.

The James Patterson adaptation titled ‘Cross,’ starring Aldis Hodge, made its debut at the top spot on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. During the week of November 11 to 17, a total of 1.36 billion minutes were spent watching all eight episodes, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 14. Since the show was only accessible for four days within that timeframe, it suggests strong viewer interest.

The TV series, developed by Ben Watkins from Pattersons’ “Alex Cross” detective book series, garnered exceptional popularity among African-American viewers, contributing about 40% of the overall viewing time. (It was disclosed in November that Pattersson had earlier declined a substantial offer for a series adaptation to portray Alex Cross as a white man, stating “that wasn’t his character.” Upon hearing this, Hodge expressed surprise, admiration, and pride.)

Coming in second in the overall top 10 is “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which premiered on Disney+ on November 14 and was the most-watched film during that viewing period. “Outer Banks” maintained its position at No. 3 following the release of five new episodes of the Netflix teen series on November 7.

Completing the lineup of popular original series are Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Cobra Kai,” and “The Diplomat”; Paramount+’s “Special Ops: Lioness” and “Tulsa King”; and Netflix’s “Arcane,” “The Great British Baking Show,” and “Sisters’ Feud.” During the period of November 11-17, Netflix contributed seven of the top ten most-streamed original series.

In the original list, “The Penguin” would have ranked fifth with a total watch time of 595 million minutes following the finale. However, since it airs live on HBO and isn’t exclusive to Max, it appears in the acquired charts instead, where it landed at No. 9. From its debut in September through November 17th, “The Penguin” gathered a total of 3.8 billion viewing minutes on Max, along with an additional 650 million from its airings on HBO. I, as a follower, found this series quite captivating.

During the timeframe of November 11th to 17th, “Family Guy” led in viewership on Hulu with a total of 970 million minutes watched. Following closely were “Bob’s Burgers” (with 968 million minutes) and “Grey’s Anatomy” (with 926 million minutes), ranking second and third respectively.

Over the holiday season, Netflix’s romantic comedies “Hot Frosty” and “Meet Me Next Christmas” found themselves in the top 10 most watched movies on the charts, securing the third and ninth positions with 439 million and 289 million minutes of viewing time respectively. Additionally, the 2018 version of “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” also made it to the seventh spot, accumulating 294 million minutes viewed, with nearly half (46%) of that engagement coming from children aged between 2 and 11 years old.

First, let’s review the overall streaming rankings by Nielsen for November 11-17. This will be broken down into three sections: original streaming titles, acquired titles, and films. So, we’ll start with the overall rankings, followed by the categories in order of their appearance.
