Remarkably true to its cherished source, Super Mario RPG shines as an endearing Nintendo Switch game, enriched with numerous user-friendly improvements that cater to novice players. Longtime Mario RPG aficionados will relish the sequence of post-game battles designed to challenge your skills.
In essence, the gameplay of Super Mario RPG on Switch remains remarkably similar to its timeless counterpart on the Super Nintendo, with refined enhancements. The tactical turn-based battles continue to be enjoyable, while the characters and their dialogue remain endearing and amusing. Moreover, the world design retains that classic, captivating charm that is synonymous with Nintendo.
The review for Super Mario RPG by TopMob reveals that they found the updated version of this SNES classic to be an enjoyable and peculiar experience. In essence, Super Mario RPG stands out as one of Nintendo’s most eccentric games, featuring quirky characters such as a villain resembling Santa Claus, unexpected doses of dark humor (like Toads being tickled as punishment and a four-eyed dog swallowing you whole while commenting on the taste), and gameplay that is both chaotic and diverse. The original Super Mario RPG concluded the SNES era in style. Similarly, the new version for Nintendo Switch offers an unusual remaster experience. While it may look like a contemporary Mario game at first glance, this appearance is merely a disguise. In truth, the new Super Mario RPG remains incredibly loyal to its original form and represents a daring and mostly successful experiment.
Even though Super Mario RPG for Nintendo Switch was launched just a year ago, two more Mario RPG games have been introduced since then. In May, an upgraded version of the classic GameCube game, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, hit the shelves. This updated edition is incredibly similar to its original release, and our review awarded it a 9/10 score.
Back in November, Nintendo breathed new life into the Mario & Luigi RPG series with “Mario & Luigi: Brothership.” In our assessment, it got a 6/10. Though I loved the visual aesthetics and narrative, the game was plagued by performance hiccups, repetitive battles, and pacing inconsistencies. These elements made the journey an unpredictable, yet entertaining, excursion that might have been slightly overextended, stretching it a tad too thin.
Currently, both classic Mario RPGs and Paper Mario: The Origami King are discounted on Amazon and Woot, allowing you to enjoy a reduced price on all four physical versions of Mario’s role-playing games at present.
