As a seasoned Assassin’s Creed fan with countless hours lost in the vast open worlds of Westeros, Constantinople, and Alexandria, I am thrilled to hear about the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The introduction of a canon mode for those who prefer a linear narrative is a welcome addition, allowing us choice-averse players to immerse ourselves in the story without second-guessing dialogue options or romantic pursuits.
In the Assassin’s Creed series, player decisions have always played a significant role, and this trend continues with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. For those who prefer a more straightforward narrative, Ubisoft is adding a new ‘Canon Mode’ to Shadows that allows players to enjoy the story unfold without needing to decide between different dialogue options or romantic interests.
In a Reddit session, Shadow’s director, Jonathan Dumont, unveiled the latest feature alongside fellow game developers.
In the words of Dumont, when it comes to gathering allies and developing relationships with certain characters, decisions become crucial. Given the divided fan base regarding branching dialogues, we’ve added a feature known as Canon Mode. This mode lets you play the game with predetermined choices, offering an option for those who prefer a choice-free experience. We hope this caters to everyone’s enjoyment!
Additionally, Dumont pointed out that the game Shadows shares a similar size with Assassin’s Creed Origins. In an interesting twist, Narrative Director Brooke Davies mentioned that the primary characters, Naoe and Yasuke, have the option to choose their romantic partners in non-canonical modes, providing both brief and extended romance possibilities. Moreover, she explained that the narrative of Shadows concludes with a single, canonical ending; however, there are numerous distinct paths leading up to this point, influencing who will join (or stay away) from your journey.
Memories” is expected to make an appearance in “Shadows.
Additionally, Davies indicated that Naoe and Yasuke won’t immediately be on the same side.
According to Davies, these individuals’ journeys eventually lead them to unite for a mutual purpose. However, it’s important to note that their path isn’t always easy or straightforward, and their diverse backgrounds and viewpoints don’t always agree. We’ll observe them navigating these differences and sometimes even assisting them in doing so by making some intriguing decisions.
Ubisoft recently shared a lengthy overview of how combat will work in Shadows. Details about the game’s battle pass have leaked online, and Ubisoft has stated that the rewards in the Animus Hub are free. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 14, 2025.
