As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of small-town dramas and high school football narratives, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news that “Friday Night Lights” is making a comeback! The original series was more than just a TV show – it was a poignant exploration of resilience, community spirit, and the indomitable human spirit.
The “Friday Night Lights” reboot series has found its home on Peacock, and this announcement comes amidst fierce competition, as confirmed by EbMaster.
The NBCUniversal streaming platform is currently working on this show’s production. Initially, reports emerged in November stating that a revamped version of the series was being planned, but at that point, no streaming service had been assigned for it.
After a devastating hurricane, a motley crew of a high school football team, along with their temporary coach, embark on an unexpected journey towards the Texas High School State Championship. They serve as a source of hope and inspiration for their community during this challenging time.
In the new series, alongside original showrunner and executive producer Jason Katims, we have the original director and executive producer Peter Berg, and original executive producer Brian Grazer at the helm. Joining them is Kristen Zolner, who takes on the role of executive producer for Imagine Entertainment. Universal Television is responsible for production in this venture.
For five seasons spanning from 2006 to 2011, “Friday Night Lights” TV show graced our screens, initially on NBC and later on AT&T’s The 101 Network. The series drew inspiration from H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 book with the same title, which was earlier transformed into a 2004 movie titled “Friday Night Lights” and starring Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role, based on a screenplay by Berg.
The “Friday Night Lights” series originally focused on a high school football team situated in a fictional Texas town named Dillon, under the guidance of Eric Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler. Alongside him were stars like Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, Minka Kelly, Zach Gilford, Jesse Plemons, Michael B. Jordan, Jurnee Smollett, and others. Throughout its broadcast, the show garnered 14 Emmy nominations. In 2011, Chandler earned the award for best actor in a drama series, while Katims was honored with the best writing for a drama award that same year.
Deadline first reported the show was set up at Peacock.
