The thought of Geralt’s grumpy disdain for the noise and stench of Night City, or his unexpected philanthropy leaving a lasting impact on its denizens, is an enticing one. Alas, it was not meant to be, but I still find solace in the fact that Geralt has left his mark elsewhere, from Monster Hunter: World to Soulcalibur 6.
2023 will be the 10th anniversary of the release of CD Projekt Red’s blockbuster game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has continued to captivate players across two console generations. During the development phase of The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red was already setting the stage for its upcoming title, Cyberpunk 2077. A recent report indicates that an original quest for The Witcher 3 nearly saw Geralt of Rivia temporarily travel to Night City, the setting of Cyberpunk 2077.
As a dedicated gamer, I stumbled upon an exciting piece of information from a fresh eBook series titled “What Lies Unseen.” This epic narrative, divided into multiple volumes, delves deep into the creation process behind The Witcher 3, masterfully crafted by the brilliant minds of modders and data miners such as Crygreg, Ferroxius, and Glassfish.
In one of the lost lines of dialogue, Avallac’h describes Night City as “technologically advanced, but broken… dying.” Geralt initially wonders if the city is in the afterlife before expressing his disgust for the stench and the noise. Intriguingly, Geralt would have inadvertently left his mark on the city by giving some coins to a beggar who he took pity on. Those coins would have proven more valuable than Geralt realized, as the initial plan was reportedly for the character to reappear in Cyberpunk 2077 as a wealthy individual.
Although the planned crossover didn’t happen, Geralt has made appearances in games other than those within The Witcher series, such as Monster Hunter: World and Soulcalibur 6. It’s likely that Geralt will reappear in some form in The Witcher 4, which is now in active development. However, the release of this sequel might still be a few years off. On a brighter note, a real-life version of The Witcher’s Gwent card game is scheduled for release in 2025.
