Golden Globes Expansion Includes Separate Gala for Honorary Winners Viola Davis and Ted Danson; Luncheon for First-Time Nominees

As a movie enthusiast who has been following the Golden Globes for the past two decades, I must say that this year’s developments are nothing short of exhilarating! The decision to honor Viola Davis and Ted Danson with separate gala dinners before the main event is a brilliant move. It allows these exceptional artists to bask in the glory they truly deserve without being overshadowed by the usual rush of awards.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming expansion of the Golden Globes this year by Dick Clark Prods. They’re adding not one, but two additional events to their schedule! For the first time ever, they’ll be hosting a special gala dinner on January 3rd, honoring recipients of their most prestigious awards: Viola Davis (Cecil B. DeMille winner) and Ted Danson (Carol Burnett Award recipient). Plus, they’re planning a luncheon to celebrate first-time nominees! The main telecast will still be on January 5th, but the excitement starts earlier this year!

Similar to the main Golden Globe event, the Cecil B. DeMille/Carol Burnett award gala will occur at the Beverly Hilton. Unlike the entire ceremony, this event won’t be televised live, but highlights of when Davis and Danson receive their honors will be featured during the 82nd Annual Golden Globes telecast.

Barry Adelman, the executive Vice President of television for Dick Clark Productions, explained that splitting the honorary awards into a separate event would allow a full evening to celebrate Davis and Danson. They discovered it was difficult to provide a comprehensive tribute within the time constraints of the show due to having to fit in with 26 other awards. The truncated tribute does not do justice to their achievements. By dedicating an entire night, they will be honored by their peers and friends, and at their own event, they’ll also receive recognition during Dick Clark Productions’ show. This way, both of them can experience the appreciation that they truly deserve in a fitting manner.

At the upcoming luncheon for first-time nominees at the Globes, which is set later this month, these awards will be presented to 26 actors who have been nominated for the very first time. Among those honored are this year’s Globes host, Nikki Glaser (nominated in the stand-up comedy special category for “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die”), as well as Ariana Grande, Dakota Fanning, Glen Powell, Jesse Plemons, Karla Sofia Gascón, Kathryn Hahn, Liza Colón-Zayas, Maya Erskine, Pamela Anderson, Richard Gadd, Seth Meyers, Zoe Saldaña, Anna Sawai, and others.

Adelman stated that receiving your initial nomination is quite significant, as it offers an opportunity to rejoice alongside others who share the same experience. The ambiance promises to be truly exhilarating.

Approximately two years have passed since Dick Clark Productions and Todd Boehly’s Eldridge took over the assets of the awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This acquisition granted them the chance to innovate in the way they present the Golden Globes, as Dick Clark Productions had already been involved with the show for many decades.

Adelman expressed that we’ve grasped the essence of the show after working on it for so long, knowing what keeps it engaging and what improvements are necessary. Now, we have an opportunity to brainstorm new ideas and test them out. If these ideas seem promising and beneficial for the business, we will definitely implement them.

Last year’s Golden Globe awards on CBS experienced a 50% increase in ratings; this upcoming broadcast marks the first under a newly signed five-year contract between CBS and the Eye Network (alongside its streaming platform, Paramount+), which officially grants them the right to air the ceremony.

Adelman expressed his excitement about CBS, stating they are an exceptional creative collaborator. He’s confident that having Nikki Glaser as the host will attract viewers. If he wasn’t producing the show, Adelman admitted he’d be tuning in to see what she has to say. He believes they’re maintaining the unpredictable spirit of the Golden Globes.

Despite receiving poor ratings for his performance last year, Jo Koy was praised for attracting a substantial audience due to his popularity. While Adelman acknowledged this, he also noted that the host announced in September, Glaser, had more time to prepare for the show.

He mentioned that she’s had some additional time to ponder, given her exceptional intelligence and wit. If you watched the Tom Brady roast or her comedy special, you’d understand her humor. At times, it can be a bit edgy, but she always manages to capture everyone’s attention with her words. I believe many will tune in just to see what thought-provoking statements she might make next.

Additionally, the awards themselves are noteworthy. This marks the second time that the Globes will bestow an honor for “cinematic and box office success,” which celebrates popular films like “Alien: Romulus,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Gladiator II,” “Inside Out 2,” “Twisters,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot.

Adelman stated that these films merit recognition as they’re breaking records globally and contributing significantly to our shared industry. I believe it’s fantastic to celebrate these films and I’m looking forward to it. When a film generates such impressive profits, as some of these movies have done, it’s only fair that the industry acknowledges their outstanding achievement.
