The itch.io games website disappeared but is now back online. Toy manufacturer Funko faces blame

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent exploring the vast digital landscapes of independent gaming, I can’t help but feel a pang of frustration as I find myself once again locked out of itch.io, a platform that has been a beacon for indie game enthusiasts like me. The recent incident involving Funko and their overzealous AI-powered brand protection software, BrandShield, has left us high and dry, much like Wily’s robots after a good old-fashioned beatdown from Mega Man.

Currently, I’m having some trouble with itch.io, my go-to spot for indie gaming goodness. Seems like an unintentional phishing alert caused the whole platform to go offline.

According to reports from X, it appears that Funko, a toy-producing company, finds itself in a predicament. They utilized unique software powered by artificial intelligence for brand protection, which mistakenly sent a false alert to the itch.io registrar.

Without a doubt, Itchio was deactivated by OriginalFunko due to their aggressive “AI-driven” Brand Protection tool, BrandShield. This software fabricated a phishing complaint that was sent to our domain registrar. Unfortunately, when we responded, they chose to disregard our explanation and simply shut down the domain instead.

The page Funko flagged was swiftly taken down, however, the website itself remained inaccessible, likely due to automated systems. At present, we’re uncertain how long itch.io will stay offline. It’s noteworthy that this situation is significant because the platform serves as a revenue source for numerous developers globally, potentially causing financial hardship.

On the itch.io platform under username X, fresh information about the current state of affairs is being posted regularly. The servers run round-the-clock, and an attempt was made to establish a new website. However, this move encountered some obstacles, so we may have to be patient until the issues are resolved.
