‘Moana 2’ Hits $600 Million at Global Box Office, ‘Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ Fizzles Overseas With $2 Million Debut

As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic masterpieces, I must say that this week’s box office numbers have left me both astounded and amused.

In just two weeks since its debut, ‘Moana 2’ has earned approximately $600 million worldwide, ranking it as the sixth highest-grossing film of the year so far.

Disney’s animated sequel, initially planned as a TV series but later moved to cinemas, has earned a total of $600 million globally, with $300 million coming from overseas sales and an equal amount domestically. In the near future, it is expected to surpass the lifetime earnings of its predecessor, 2016’s “Moana,” which stands at approximately $643 million worldwide.

Over the weekend, “Moana 2” earned a substantial sum of approximately $103.5 million from 52 international markets, as well as around $52 million in North America. Excluding the United States and Canada, France has seen the largest audience with a total of about $32.5 million so far, followed by the United Kingdom with around $27.2 million, Germany with approximately $19.7 million, and Mexico with roughly $19.1 million.

In its initial release across 31 countries, the Warner Bros. anime adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” had a lackluster start, earning approximately $2 million from 3,410 screens. Set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters, this film will premiere in North America and an additional 42 foreign markets on Dec. 13. Spain emerged as the top-earning territory with $347,000, followed closely by Mexico with $239,000 and Thailand with $146,000.

In another impressive earnings feat, Universal’s “Wicked” remake grossed over $400 million globally, accumulating $135 million from foreign territories and $320 million within the U.S. The high-cost musical raked in an additional $26 million from 79 international markets, with debuts in France earning $2 million and Netherlands bringing in $1.9 million. Unfortunately, “Wicked” underperformed significantly in China with a disappointing opening of $1.2 million on 8,900 screens, placing it at the eighth spot on China’s box office rankings.

Simultaneously, “Gladiator II” by Paramount earned $17 million in its fourth week at the international box office, raising its total overseas earnings to $235 million and its global earnings to $368.4 million. As a sequel that took 25 years to make, Ridley Scott’s 2000 Oscar-winning “Gladiator” has been more successful in foreign markets. Consequently, the film is heavily depending on international viewers to help cover its substantial production budget of over $250 million and at least $100 million in promotional costs.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about “Red One,” an action-comedy set during Christmas, where The Rock takes on the role of Santa’s head of security. It brought in $3.5 million from 4,000 screens across 75 international markets for Amazon MGM. Globally, it has generated a total of $164 million, with $78.2 million coming from overseas territories.
