M. Night Shyamalan is a filmmaker famous for his surprising plot twists, seen in movies like *The Sixth Sense*, *Signs*, and 2024’s *Trap*. He’s now taking on a new challenge: turning a well-known toy into a TV series.
M. Night Shyamalan will direct a new live-action TV series inspired by the classic Magic 8 Ball toy. Mattel, the company that makes the toy, announced the project. Brad Falchuk, known for co-creating shows like *Glee* and *American Horror Story*, will be the writer.
M. Night Shyamalan announced the new series on Instagram, sharing a picture of the pilot script alongside a classic Magic 8 Ball. His caption, “Been working on this for a couple years…Who’s in?” hinted at the project’s development. He also used the hashtag “It Is Certain,” a nod to one of the Magic 8 Ball’s famous responses. The script cover suggests the series will be called *Magic 8 Ball*, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
M. Night Shyamalan and Ryan Falchuk will both lead the creative direction of the new series. Shyamalan’s previous television work was as an executive producer on *Servant*, which ran from 2019 to 2023. According to Mattel, the pair aims to create a suspenseful, character-focused supernatural drama centered around the iconic Magic 8 Ball, exploring both psychological themes and cultural mysteries.
For around 75 years, Mattel’s Magic 8 Ball has been a beloved toy for people of all ages, selling over a million each year. You ask it a yes or no question, shake it, and flip it over to reveal a random answer inside.
Another Mattel Toy Line is Getting the Live-Action Treatment
Mattel, the creator of Barbie, had a huge year in 2023 with the incredibly successful *Barbie* movie, which grossed over $1.4 billion globally. Beyond Barbie, Mattel also makes many other popular toys, including Hot Wheels, American Girl, Thomas & Friends, UNO, Masters of the Universe, Matchbox, Monster High, Polly Pocket, and Barney.
Amazon MGM Studios is creating a live-action remake of *Masters of the Universe*, scheduled to hit theaters on June 5, 2026. The franchise originally gained popularity through a line of toys and an 80s cartoon. Nicholas Galitzine will star as He-Man in the new film. He explains that their version will be distinct from the original animated series, acknowledging its campy but effective style for its time. He also notes that previous iterations, like *Revelation* and the comics, have informed their approach, and they are treating the script as a definitive guide.
Okay, so I’m super excited about this new *Masters of the Universe* movie! The cast is looking incredible. Camila Mendes is going to play Teela, and get this – Jared Leto is Skeletor! Alison Brie is Evil-Lyn, and Idris Elba will be Man-At-Arms. They’ve also got Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena Glenn, and Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man. Seriously, this cast list is packed!
A premiere date for Shyamalan’s Magic 8 Ball series has not been announced.
