The movie “Conclave” is adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel of the same name and features Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellito, and Isabella Rossellini. It portrays one of the world’s most secretive and long-standing events – the selection of a new pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is assigned to oversee this clandestine procedure following the sudden demise of the beloved Pope. As the Catholic Church’s high-ranking figures assemble from across the globe and are confined within the Vatican, Lawrence discovers a series of hidden secrets left by the deceased Pope, secrets that could potentially rock the very foundations of the Church, as suggested by the synopsis.

The film has become an unexpected success amidst the struggle of many mature dramas to thrive. It’s anticipated to secure numerous Oscar nods, such as best picture, best director, best actor (for Fiennes), best supporting actress (for Rossellini), best adapted screenplay, best editing, and best original score.

Recently, adult-oriented films have been facing challenges in the cinema market, but it’s refreshing to see a film like ‘Conclave’ manage to stand out amidst the sequels and horror flicks, leaving its impression on theater screens. (Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations spoke this to EbMaster)

Edward Berger, who won an Oscar for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” served as the film’s director based on a script written by Peter Straughan.
