As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the evolution of comedy since the golden age of television, I can confidently say that Bill Murray‘s praise for the current cast of Saturday Night Live is not merely nostalgia talking. Having seen Murray transform from a SNL stalwart to a Hollywood heavyweight in the ’80s, I can attest to his ability to discern quality comedy.
Bill Murray recently featured on Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast (as reported by The Daily Beast) and stood up for the present team of “Saturday Night Live,” dismissing criticism that the show is subpar or lackluster. Murray was a part of the “SNL” ensemble from 1977 to 1980, and later achieved stardom in comedy films such as “Caddyshack,” “Stripes,” and “Ghostbusters,” which were released during the early ’80s following his time on the show.
Murray often faces comments like, “The original series was fantastic and this one is terrible,” but he counters by saying, “Not at all.” The current version of the show consistently delivers content that’s just as impressive as anything that was done before.
Murray has made it clear that he intends to make a comeback on “SNL” this year, as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. He mentioned that he asked if he could host an episode this year, so if he manages to get his act together. Previously, he hosted the show twice when he was there before. He expressed that this might be his final attempt at hosting it.
If Murray gets the chance to host “SNL” this season, he acknowledges that no one could surpass the exceptional host he’s witnessed so far – Ray Charles, who graced the show with his presence back in November 1977.
Murray remarked, ‘He’s the one who truly outshines everyone else.’ In my experience and knowledge, Ray Charles surpasses any other entertainer I’ve come across.
I’ll tell you this: Ray Charles had every line memorized like the back of his hand. He graced us with solos, collaborated with The Raelettes, led with his own orchestra during ‘Saturday Night Live’, and possibly with his quintet too. Every performance he gave was nothing short of electrifying, leaving a lasting impact that still resonates today.
Murray was astonished by Charles’ “SNL” performance to such an extent that he felt it wasn’t fitting for him to share the stage with Charles during the closing credits at the end of the show.
At the conclusion of the performance, they play a particular tune, accompanied by saxophones, and Murray remarks, “Boy, I’ve had an excellent week!” He’s up there on stage, waving to the crowd, but he admits he didn’t want to be on that stage. He felt out of place sharing it with Ray Charles.
