As a seasoned journalist with over two decades of experience under my belt, I am thrilled to see CBS News taking bold steps into the future of news broadcasting. The launch of “CBS Evening News Plus” is a testament to the network’s commitment to innovation and catering to diverse audiences in this digital age.
The revamped “CBS Evening News” doesn’t debut until early next year, yet it already has a follow-up show.
On Wednesday, CBS News announced plans to debut “CBS Evening News Plus,” an extended version of their revamped main news program, which will be available online and on selected CBS-owned TV stations. This new 30-minute broadcast, hosted by John Dickerson, is already scheduled to air on KCBS in Los Angeles, KPIX in San Francisco, KOVR in Sacramento, and WFOR in Miami.
As a film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: “I, John, am a versatile journalist, navigating seamlessly across various platforms – from television to streaming, podcasts, magazines, and books. In an era where information floods us relentlessly, I excel in tailoring news and narratives for diverse audiences. This adaptability will be the driving force behind what you’ll see each night on ‘CBS Evening News Plus,’ as noted by Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS’ news, stations, and syndication operations.
For several decades, watching the network evening news has been a solo activity. However, CBS is now aiming to incorporate it into a larger media strategy.
On Friday, January 24, Norah O’Donnell will conclude her tenure as anchor for the esteemed “CBS Evening News”. Beginning Monday, January 27, Dickerson and Maurice DuBois of WCBS will take over the program. The new team, which includes weathercaster Lonnie Quinn and Margaret Brennan from “Face The Nation”, based in Washington, will focus on breaking news and providing greater depth, rather than rushing through numerous stories that arose during the day within half an hour.
Under McMahon’s leadership, CBS News has been aiming to generate more curiosity about a wider variety of streaming content. This content can be found on the free, ad-supported 24/7 CBS News platform. A third hour of “CBS Mornings,” called “CBS Morning Plus,” was launched in September and is available for streaming on certain CBS stations.
Alturo Rhymes, with over two decades of experience at CBS News, has been appointed as the executive producer for “CBS Evening News Plus.” Previously, he served as an executive story editor and co-senior broadcast producer for the evening news. In his new role, he will assist in shaping what could potentially be a format defining its future.
For me, this assignment feels like an extension of my existing responsibilities. Since 2022, I’ve been hosting a one-hour evening newscast at 7 p.m. on CBS streaming platforms. This broadcast offers viewers a more profound grasp of the day’s events by providing insight and historical context.
