As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for blockbusters and a soft spot for musicals, I must say that this weekend’s box office numbers have left me absolutely Moana-d! The success of “Moana 2” is nothing short of a miracle on the water, shattering records and proving yet again that Disney knows how to craft an enchanting tale.
Disney’s sequel film “Moana 2” amassed an impressive total of $386 million at the worldwide box office, with a strong earning of $165.3 million from international markets.
The sales for the new animated family movie have been the second most successful worldwide debut of the year so far, trailing only behind Disney’s blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($438 million). This sequel to the 2016 hit “Moana” began showing in North American cinemas a day early, on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Over the standard weekend, it earned approximately $300.8 million worldwide.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I was thrilled to witness the phenomenal success of “Moana 2” at the domestic box office this past Thanksgiving. Breaking all records for the holiday season, it earned an astounding $221 million over five days, surpassing the previous benchmark set by “Frozen II” in 2019 ($125 million).
Originally intended for Disney+’s television lineup, “Moana 2” was later transformed into a theatrical movie production. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson once again lend their voices to the characters Moana (a non-princess heroine) and Maui (the tattooed demigod), respectively. The sequel continues the story with Moana embarking on a voyage deep into the sea to locate a secret island and lift a curse.
In other locations, “Wicked” earned an additional $29 million from 61 different areas, raising its international earnings to $97 million. However, it has been much more successful in North America where it has grossed $262 million so far, making it the highest-grossing domestic adaptation of a Broadway show ever, surpassing 1978’s “Grease” ($188.62 million). With a global total of $359.2 million, “Wicked” is now the fourth highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in history, following “Mamma Mia” (2008 – $611 million), “Les Miserables” (2012 – $442 million), and “Grease”. It’s important to note that each part of this two-part story carries a production cost of around $150 million before marketing expenses. The second installment is set to be released in 2025.
In its third week at international cinemas, “Gladiator II” brought in $27.2 million, raising its total earnings to $208.8 million. The anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film “Gladiator” has earned $111.2 million domestically and a worldwide total of $320 million thus far. With a budget exceeding $250 million (including promotional expenses), “Gladiator II” needs to keep performing well at the global box office during the holiday season in order to recoup its costs.
