What to do with broken weapons in Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating post-apocalyptic wastelands, I can confidently say that Stalker 2 has taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, less is more.

As a gamer immersed in the gritty reality of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl (stylized as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2), it might be tempting to grab every item I stumble upon. However, one of the game’s intriguing mechanics teaches me that it’s often smarter to abandon broken weapons.

In Stalker 2, there’s a wear-and-tear system applied to all the weapons and armor used by players. Each time you shoot your preferred firearm, its quality slightly deteriorates. As it becomes worse, there’s an increased chance for the gun to misfire or malfunction.

That feature makes regular maintenance of your gear a necessity, and you might think those repairs can, in part, be funded by selling other weapons you find in the world. Unfortunately, traders in the zone won’t buy equipment in poor condition, and it isn’t cost effective to repair them and then sell them on.

Couldn’t we ensure that these weapons are fixed or replaced before they reach the players’ hands?

Loot the guns for ammo but leave the weapon behind

Whenever you defeat an adversary or come across a discarded weapon, take a moment to assess its status. If it bears a damaged, red-tinted emblem resembling a shield, it’s best to forgo using it. Prior to letting go, ensure the weapon is completely empty of ammunition.

One smart approach to maximize your savings on ammunition is by carefully collecting it instead of purchasing from traders. By doing so, you can accumulate coupons more efficiently. If the weapon you discover has a cracked yellow symbol or no mark at all, consider adding it to your collection as a possible item for resale.

It’s wisely advised against fixing guns with the intention of promptly selling them. The expenses incurred from repairs usually far exceed the value at which you can trade the firearm, so beware of ending up with a loss, as I unfortunately experienced.
