Florida man accused of posing as Elon Musk to steal $250K from elderly woman

As a seasoned gamer and tech enthusiast with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this latest scam attempt by Jeffrey Arthur Moynihan Jr. is nothing short of pathetic. Elon Musk, a man who has not only revolutionized the space industry but also conquered the gaming world by becoming the best Diablo 4 player, deserves more respect than this lowlife trying to impersonate him for personal gain.

As Jeffrey Arthur Moynihan Jr., a gaming enthusiast hailing from sunny Florida, I’ve found myself in a rather tricky situation. Police have accused me of impersonating the one and only Elon Musk, with the intention of swindling an elderly lady out of a quarter-million dollars. Needless to say, this isn’t your typical gaming adventure!

Elon Musk has a lot going for him. He’s the CEO of one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, he regularly sends rockets into space, and he recently became the best Diablo 4 player in the world. Of course, not everyone loves the tech billionaire.

Notably, fellow tycoon Mark Cuban has criticized Musk in the past, while Mark Zuckerberg has expressed a desire for a physical confrontation with him. Despite such prominent adversaries, Musk finds himself in an admirable position, and it’s not hard to see why some might envy his situation.

Indeed, there have been instances where people have tried to fill those shoes with ulterior motives in mind. As FOX Business previously reported, Jeffrey Arthur Moynihan Jr., also known as Florida Man, was apprehended and indicted for grand theft. The allegation is that he posed as Elon Musk as part of a $250,000 fraudulent scheme.

Fake Elon Musk steals $250,000 in online scam

On November 19, 2024, Moynihan was taken into custody at his residence in Bradenton, Florida. This action followed a police probe that discovered he had allegedly swindled over a quarter of a million dollars from a 74-year-old woman residing in Texas.

It is claimed by authorities that Moynihan impersonated Elon Musk on Facebook, starting conversations with a woman since at least 2023. “The individual believed they had genuinely invested their funds with Elon Musk,” investigators shared.

The investigation suggests that the person, pretending to be Elon Musk, maintained friendly communication with the victim by discussing their day and popular news stories about the tech mogul. As a result, the victim perceived Elon as a friend. Subsequently, after establishing trust, the alleged ‘Elon’ proposed investments in his businesses, which the victim carried out over time on multiple occasions.

The inquiry’s findings indicate that bank accounts associated with Moynihan and his company, Jeff’s Painting and Pressure Washing LLC, received $250,000. However, the Bradenton Police Department’s representative clarified that the genuine Elon Musk was occupied with SpaceX’s latest launch and is not being investigated by their department.
