As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for both gaming and cinema, I can’t help but marvel at the fascinating tales that intertwine these two worlds. The story of Back to the Future is one such tale that leaves me utterly bewildered, amused, and somewhat grateful.
It’s surprising to learn that Disney found Back to the Future inappropriate, leading to their decision against producing it as a blockbuster hit. This is an interesting tale from when Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis were searching for a studio, only to find that their pitch to Disney representatives was turned down after viewing just one scene which they found too explicit.
In the movie “Back to the Future,” a young Lorraine McFly unintentionally develops an interest in her own future son, which some might find inappropriate according to Disney’s standards of good taste. This plot point elicits varying reactions from viewers, making it unsurprising that Disney found it questionable too.
In 2010, during a conversation with CNN, Gale shared that Disney turned them down following approaches from other studios who had previously expressed little interest in their project and suggested they approach Disney instead (as reported by Collider).
Initially, Bob and I had often joked about visiting Disney, but one day we decided to go ahead and do it, even though Michael Eisner hadn’t yet restructured the company at that time. This was still the era of the original Disney family management. During our meeting with an executive, he expressed his skepticism, asking us if we were out of our minds or insane. He explained that a movie like ours, featuring a child and mother in a car, could be seen as incestuous – something Disney would never associate itself with due to its family-friendly image, and considered it too explicit for their standards.
As a passionate fan, I must say, Disney wasn’t the chosen platform for “Back to the Future”. However, despite the film’s contentious narrative, it became a resounding success. Interestingly, it was Steven Spielberg, a close companion of Zemeckis and Gale, who played a pivotal role in its birth. Indeed, “Back to the Future” was brought to life under the banner of Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, ensuring the project didn’t remain an unrealized dream, but reached the eager hands of moviegoers like me.
