As a long-time Steam user who has weathered numerous updates and changes over the years, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are phased out from the platform. I remember the excitement of installing Windows 7 on my first gaming rig back in 2009, and the countless hours spent playing games within its realm.
The updated Steam client launched on November 5 no longer provides compatibility with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Starting from January 1, 2022, Valve has ceased support for these operating systems. Despite this, as mentioned in their technical support message, the Steam platform and games installed through it will continue functioning on these OS versions for a while longer.
End of older versions of Windows on Steam
It was inevitable that Microsoft would no longer provide support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, given that they stopped supporting these operating systems in 2020 and 2023 respectively. To ensure security, it’s highly recommended to transition to either Windows 10 or 11. However, if a user is unable to upgrade for any reason, they should refrain from updating Steam to continue accessing their game library.
Valve’s choice might have been influenced by player behavior as well. A survey in September indicated that the waning popularity of older versions of Windows continues, with Windows 11 growing more popular. Even Windows 10 has seen a decrease, possibly due to Microsoft’s impending withdrawal of support for this system. Lately, Windows 11 has encountered issues related to the 24H2 update.
The updated Steam client is incompatible with certain Windows versions. Similarly, MacOS users running High Sierra (10.13) and Mojave (10.14) will find it impossible to operate Valve’s platform on their devices. Although they will no longer receive support after February 15, 2024, they can continue using Steam until early November.
For macOS users, it’s worth noting that more than 98% of gamers on this platform are running at least the macOS 10.15 version, which is Catalina. Therefore, the update due on November 5th will primarily impact a minimal number of players.
