As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I find myself captivated by the work of Argentine director Luciana Piantanida and her upcoming project “All the Strength.” Having traversed the complexities of Argentina’s national industry under various political regimes, it’s heartening to see filmmakers like Piantanida persevere, creating thought-provoking narratives that resonate universally.
Argentine filmmaker Luciana Piantanida, who has written, directed, and produced her second film titled “All the Strength” (“Todas las fuerzas”), is planning to present this completed project at Ventana Sur‘s Copia Final. Here, she hopes to find a sales agent, distribution deals, and potential festival screenings.
Known primarily for her critically acclaimed first film, “Los Ausentes,” Piantanida is a partner in production company Pensar con las Manos alongside Andrea Testa and Francisco Márquez. This trio made their co-directorial debut with the movie “The Long Night of Francisco Sanctis,” which had its world premiere at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
The story unfolds around Marlene, a 47-year-old migrant caregiver, residing in the home of her elderly employer. Despite her demanding full-time job, when she learns about a friend’s disappearance, she secretly embarks on a nocturnal search. Her investigations guide her to workplaces that operate under the cover of darkness, where she encounters other women who, like Marlene, have developed their abilities into extraordinary powers through practice.
As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by the raw talent displayed in “The Caregivers.” Celia Santos, a Bolivian newcomer to the acting scene, delivers an exceptional performance as Marlene. She’s ably assisted by Argentine actors Silvina Sabater and Andrea Garrote. Interestingly, the rest of the caregiving crew is composed of non-professional actors hailing from Peru and Paraguay, a testament to the film’s commitment to authenticity in casting.
In my own words, I shared that this movie twists traditional storylines by not relying on the police for a crime narrative. Instead, it features an elderly migrant woman as the protagonist who uncovers clues when her work permits. As the plot progresses, it delves into fantasy, yet its primary intent is to shed light on a pressing social issue from a compassionate, human perspective, focusing on characters who are often overlooked in mainstream narratives. I shared this during my conversation with EbMaster.
In Peru, the production companies La Dupla and Maretazo Cine, led by brothers Daniel and Diego Vega, have joined as co-producers in a minority capacity. Daniel Vega will take on the role of executive producer for this project.
2022 saw the filming of this project in Buenos Aires. It garnered backing from Peru’s co-production incentive, INCAA (the Argentine film-TV body), and the city government of Buenos Aires.
In Argentina, it’s currently unfeasible to progress due to President Milei’s policies that have withdrawn support for the national industry, including our film industry. We can no longer count on the government to foster our cinematic field. Essentially, they are tearing down our cultural fabric, said Piantanida. He further explained that the lack of funding impacts not only cinema but also culture in its entirety, science, education, and healthcare.
The Ventana Sur Roo de la Plata 2024 event, supported by Cannes’ Marché du Film and Festival, will be hosted by Argentina’s INCAA (National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts) and Uruguay’s ACAU (National Cinematheque Administration), for the first time in Montevideo, Uruguay instead of its usual location in Buenos Aires, from December 2nd to 6th.
