As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of moviegoing and television viewing under my belt, I must say that the recent drama between Elon Musk and Chloe Fineman has piqued my interest, if not my amusement.
Elon Musk defended himself against Chloe Fineman’s claim that he caused her to cry during his stint as “Saturday Night Live” host by emphasizing his concerns about the show not being funny. Musk was the host of SNL in May 2021.
In truth, it wasn’t until the Thursday preceding the Saturday that any of the sketches drew laughter, as Musk shared on platform X. I was concerned that my ‘SNL’ appearance would be so unfunny that it could even sober a crackhead! Fortunately, things turned out alright in the end.
In a now-vanished TikTok post, Fineman confessed to being one of the “Saturday Night Live” cast members who wept at the hands of a host. Back in August, SNL’s Bowen Yang openly disclosed that a male host had once left several cast members in tears during a script reading because he despised the concepts for sketches. Yang did not disclose the host’s identity but suggested it happened on the day before filming (which coincides with Musk now stating it wasn’t until the next day that he found the pitched sketches amusing). As a devoted SNL fan, I can only imagine the tension behind the scenes!
In the removed video, Fineman addressed Musk’s recent criticism towards “SNK” following Dana Carvey’s debut of a Musk impression during the Bill Burr-hosted episode that aired on November 9. On his platform X, Musk stated that “SNK” has been gradually losing its relevance over time as they become progressively disconnected from reality.
“OK, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butt-hurt about ‘SNL’ and his impression, but I’m, like, you’re clearly watching the show. Like, what are you talking about?” Fineman fired back in the video. “And I’m like, you know what? I’m gonna come out and say at long last that I’m the cast member that he made cry. And he’s the host that made someone cry. Maybe there’s others.”
“If you’re gonna go on your platform and be rude, like, guess what? You made I, Chloe Fineman, burst into tears because I stayed up all night writing the sketch,” she added of Musk. “I was so excited, I came in, I asked if you had any questions and you stared at me like you were firing me from Tesla and were like, ‘It’s not funny.’ I waited for you to be like, ‘Ha ha, JK.’ No. Then you started pawing through my script, like flipping each page, being, like, ‘I didn’t laugh once, not one time.’”
The drawing eventually aired, and Fineman confessed that she truly enjoyed herself, adding that Musk was quite amusing in it. However, let’s maintain some decorum, sir.
