As a fervent admirer of Gary Lineker‘s illustrious career, I find myself at a crossroads of emotions upon learning about his departure from BBC’s “Match of the Day.” A broadcasting legend who has graced our screens since 1999, Lineker’s charisma and expertise have made him an integral part of British football culture.

Gary Lineker is departing BBC‘s flagship soccer series “Match of the Day,” BBC News reports.

After the conclusion of the current season in May 2025, Gary Lineker, the highest-paid presenter on our broadcasting team who has been hosting the show since 1999, plans to step down. As reported by BBC News, an official announcement about this change is anticipated to be made public on Tuesday.

According to The Sun, a popular U.K. tabloid, Gary Lineker is planning to depart from the BBC entirely following his role as the lead coverage provider for the 2026 World Cup.

The BBC chose not to provide a statement regarding the issue. A spokesperson for Lineker has yet to get back to EbMaster’s request for a response.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve got to share some exciting (yet bittersweet) news: Gary Lineker, our beloved presenter, is stepping down from his role at the BBC following recent contract negotiations. For quite some time now, he’s been their top-grossing talent, earning a cool £1.35 million ($1.74 million) between 2020 and 2021. It’s hard to imagine my movie nights without his insightful commentary!

Over time, his salary has drawn criticism, as well as his vocal political opinions. Last March, Lineker found himself in a heated discussion over a contentious U.K. bill regarding illegal migration on social media, labeling it a “cruel policy aimed at the most vulnerable individuals,” comparing its language to that used by Germany during the 1930s.

Responding to this, the BBC concluded that Lineker violated their social media rules, leading to a temporary suspension from his hosting duties.

Yet, during a lunch hosted by the Broadcasting Press Guild in February, Lineker stated that he hadn’t felt constrained by the broadcaster when voicing his views.

As a movie buff who’s no stranger to social media, I’ve been tweeting as usual, keeping it sensible and in line with the rules, but let me tell you, the latest updates have opened up some exciting new possibilities! I’m familiar with the ins and outs of these guidelines, and it seems they’re encouraging more open dialogue on a variety of topics. We can share our thoughts, opinions, and even engage in lively discussions, which makes tweeting even more enjoyable.
