The development of Star Citizen has been a lengthy process, marked by grand visions and numerous setbacks. It’s been about 13 years since the first alpha version was released, and during that time, the game has attracted a dedicated, though often critical, fanbase – even receiving criticism from people who used to work at the game’s developer, Cloud Imperium Games. In 2016, a few years after the initial alpha, the StarShip42 website launched, offering fans a way to explore the game’s ships in 3D. However, after nearly a decade online, the site is now being taken down.
The end of StarShip42
Over time, StarShip42 added several useful features. FleetView allowed players to visualize their entire fleet in 3D, and InVerse offered detailed interior views of ships. More recently, the Studio feature was introduced, enabling players to design and personalize wallpapers featuring their favorite *Star Citizen* ships.
After almost ten years, the website StarShip42 is closing down. Lundfoci announced that it will be taken offline on October 22nd, and shared a warm goodbye message.
There’s still a possibility StarShip42 won’t disappear, thanks to the Reddit community stepping in. Someone from the Star Citizen Wiki is trying to contact the tool’s creator, Lundfoci, to see if they’d be willing to let others take over its maintenance. Several others are also helping with communication, hoping to keep the project going. While nothing is confirmed yet, there’s still hope.
