As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the intricate plots of detective games, I must say that Yellowstone Season 5 has kept me hooked with its twists and turns. The latest revelation about John Dutton’s death is nothing short of a masterstroke by Taylor Sheridan.

In the ninth episode of Yellowstone’s fifth season, Jamie Dutton receives distressing information through a call, but he’s puzzled by the phrase “10-56.” (Spoiler alert!)

Thus, the finale commences! The last six episodes of Yellowstone have started with quite a flair, marking the culmination of Taylor Sheridan’s grand Western saga. John Dutton has met his demise, discovered lying on the bathroom floor in what appears to be a tragic suicide.

It’s not entirely clear-cut, but it’s uncovered that Jamie Dutton’s secretive girlfriend, Sarah Atwood, had hired an assassin to eliminate John. Yet, before this information surfaces, the Dutton siblings learn piece by piece about their father’s fate during the night.

53 am, and the term “10-56” refers to the cause of death. However, this code may need further explanation since it’s not immediately clear what it signifies.

What’s a 10-56?

In police lingo, a 10-56 stands for suicide. So, Jamie learns that John Dutton might have taken his own life during the course of the night.

In police communication, specific codes are employed to convey messages over the radio. Each code carries its unique significance. For example, “10-56” typically denotes a deceased person, but in this context, it specifically refers to a case where suicide is believed to be the cause of death.

Jamie appears distressed and collapses following the phone conversation, due to the emotional burden. It’s not surprising that he’s reluctant to share the reason for John’s demise with Lynelle Perry (John’s former partner), so he confides it quietly into her ear instead.

It’s possible that Jamie has his suspicions about something being wrong, or it could be that the thought of John taking his own life has deeply upset him.

In several scenes, the explanation of what exactly happened to John is withheld from the audience, keeping them on tenterhooks as they eagerly await the moment when it becomes clear to the police.

Did John Dutton really die by suicide?

It’s not accurate that John Dutton killed himself; instead, he was secretly killed by an assassin who was employed by Sarah Atwood at the behest of Jamie. The death was orchestrated to appear as a suicide.

In the eighth episode of Season 5, Jamie’s anger flared when Beth unexpectedly entered his home and assaulted him. During a quiet discussion with Sarah, who is controlled by Market Equities and manipulating Jamie, he inquired whether she knew anyone capable of doing harm.

There seems to be an implication that he’s talking about harming Beth, who also appears to be plotting the same against him. However, it’s clear that Sarah has her own schemes in motion. In Episode 9, a flashback scene reveals her visiting a secretive organization and conferring with a man called Grant.

They deliberate over their choices, and Grant suggests that although several individuals might bear responsibility for John’s death, considering it a suicide seems the wisest course to steer clear of any inquiry or suspicion.

Later, Kayce contacts the police station and finds out that the power in John’s neighborhood failed at approximately 3:50 am, resulting in no surveillance footage from the Governor’s mansion during that time. It was determined that John died around 3:53. Additionally, it is disclosed that fingerprints were discovered on his own firearm, and there were burn marks on his hand, suggesting gunpowder residue.

By all accounts, the hitman staged a good scene, but it was no suicide.

Yellowstone Season 5 continues with Episode 10 on November 17.
