As a seasoned movie buff who has witnessed numerous plot twists and climactic moments, I can say with certainty that the 2024 Election Night was akin to a nail-biting thriller. The anticipation, the tension, the unexpected turns – it was all there, right in our living rooms.
On Election Night, many prominent news anchors across the country often repeated a common phrase: “We haven’t reached our destination yet.” In hindsight, it seemed that they had indeed arrived at their destination.
2024 Election coverage by TV networks echoed their approach from 2020, preparing for a rematch between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Executives had scheduled around-the-clock sessions to cover the anticipated fight, with political pundits on standby over the weekend. Given pre-election polls, they expected that key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona might take days to determine the results. However, as the night wore on, the situation became clearer. By 11 p.m. on NBC, Lester Holt warned his team against discussing the election as if it had already been decided, remarking, “This is starting to sound like an obituary.
Shortly after 1 a.m., Bret Baier from Fox News informed viewers that Harris seemed to have no route to secure the required 270 electoral votes. At 1:23, conservative network Newsmax declared Trump as the winner, with Nexstar’s NewsNation following suit. Not long after, Fox News, which had already called Pennsylvania for Trump, confirmed the victory for a larger audience.
Throughout the night, hosts, analysts, and reporters consistently emphasized that there was yet more excitement to anticipate, with phrases like “we’re not done yet” and “there’s more to follow” echoing frequently across various channels. CNN’s John King spent a significant portion of his time employing their signature Magic Wall to illustrate the potential number of votes remaining for Harris, which could potentially help her overcome apparent disadvantages in Georgia or Pennsylvania.
After time passed, he began demonstrating to viewers that there weren’t enough to be had.
There were valid grounds for anticipating an extended period of increased interest. Presidential elections tend to draw the largest and most diverse viewership to news outlets. This can be advantageous during times when advertisers are becoming cautious about funding opinion hosts and news programs that present challenging topics like climate change and contentious electorates. If viewers find the content appealing, they might continue watching for more. At a juncture when the financial aspects of television news are being questioned, with veteran anchors retiring and high salaries under review, extended coverage periods could potentially attract new audiences.
However, unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as planned. Nonetheless, it appears that coverage will persist for another day. Both NBC News and ABC News have been preparing extensive coverage for several hours now, which will keep viewers engaged from morning shows like “Today” and “Good Morning America,” all the way through to evening programs.
It was evident long before midnight that North Carolina and Georgia would lean towards Donald Trump on election night, according to Sean Hannity on Fox News. He expressed an unwavering confidence in this prediction, stating it was as solid as any he had ever made. Meanwhile, Chris Wallace on CNN analyzed exit polls at around 5 p.m., revealing that voters were dissatisfied with key economic matters. Wallace suggested that for Kamala Harris to win under such public sentiment, she would need a remarkable turn of events or a miracle.
At 11 p.m., it became evident that Harris wasn’t gaining significant leads in key states, and the situation was becoming clearer. Chuck Todd of NBC News commented, “This is starting to look more like 2016 than 2020.” As midnight approached, Democrats would be met with a less optimistic scene. Jen Psaki, former White House Press Secretary for Biden and now an MSNBC host, shared her thoughts on the panel: “I’m a believer in waiting for certainty, but yes, if you’re part of the campaign right now, you’re feeling quite disheartened.
