After a two-year wait, developer Heart Machine launched Hyper Light Breaker as an early access title earlier this year. Unfortunately, development is now slowing down because of recent layoffs at the company.
According to Game Developer, Heart Machine announced layoffs that will also mean the end of their current project. A company spokesperson explained this is due to factors outside of their control, such as changes in funding, industry mergers, and the challenges many small game studios are facing right now.
Heart Machine has announced that they’re still working on Hyper Light Breaker. They plan to release a significantly improved version of the game as a final update in January 2026.
Heart Machine is aiming to release a highly refined and complete game, despite the challenges they’re facing. They’re focusing on polishing the experience, finishing essential features, and ensuring the game has a strong and satisfying ending, according to a company spokesperson.
Hyper Light Breaker is a new game that serves as a backstory to the critically acclaimed 2016 title, Hyper Light Drifter (which TopMob gave a 9/10 score). TopMob recently got an early look at Heart Machine’s upcoming game, Possessor(s), a metroidvania adventure launching on PC and PlayStation 5 on November 11th.
