Devs fired from scrapped Project Blackbird game launch ‘Sackbird’ studio

There’s a unique humor in facing job loss, and the team at the new studio, Sackbird, perfectly captures it.

Sackbird is a newly formed game development studio. It was created by developers who lost their jobs when ZeniMax Online Studios cancelled their unreleased MMO, codenamed Project Blackbird, in June 2025.

Considering they all lost their jobs while working on the ‘Blackbird’ project, the new name feels rather ironic.

New studio created following Project Blackbird’s cancellation

Project Blackbird was a promising online game created by some of the developers who worked on The Elder Scrolls Online. However, the project was canceled earlier this year as part of job cuts at ZeniMax. Instead of looking for work elsewhere, many of the team members decided to come back together and start something new.

The team previously known as ‘that group’ has now launched Sackbird Studios. This new, independent studio is owned by its employees and has secured enough funding to operate for several years.

A new independent game studio, Sackbird Studios, has been formed by a team of experienced developers who previously worked on Elder Scrolls Online and Project Blackbird. The studio is entirely employee-owned, self-funded for the foreseeable future, and will have complete creative freedom to develop games without outside interference. They plan to build high-quality games and maintain full control over the creative process.

After spending years working on big-budget games, my team and I really wanted to break free and take some creative risks without needing approval from a publisher or worrying about hitting sales numbers every few months. That’s why we started Sackbird Studios – we’re completely employee-owned and self-funded, which means we only have to answer to ourselves and the other gamers on the team. It’s awesome being able to focus on making the games *we* want to play!

Sackbird hasn’t announced what their first game will be, but they’ve confirmed they’re actively working on a new, original title for both PC and consoles. Although details are limited, it probably won’t be similar to the online game project that the team previously worked on and which was ultimately cancelled.

For now, Sackbird’s message is clear: they’ve moved on, and they’re flying on their own this time.
