Beware! The following contains spoilers for the most recent episode of *High Potential*, available on ABC and Hulu.
Now that the strange storyline involving the Game Master has been mostly resolved and the search for Morgan’s husband is happening in the background, *High Potential* can really focus on the new captain at the precinct, played by Steve Howey, known from *Shameless*. His confident, almost arrogant, attitude made it clear everyone – especially Soto – was unhappy she didn’t get the promotion.
I recently read an interview with Judy Reyes, who plays my favorite character, and she talked about how bummed they were with the low viewer numbers for her storyline. But she also hinted at some really exciting things coming up for her character, Soto, and even beyond! I’m so glad she addressed it and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Mental Justice For Soto
Those following news and interviews leading up to Season 2 already knew Soto wouldn’t become Captain right away, thanks to the arrival of Nick Wagner (played by Steve Howey). Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise when she told her team the disappointing news.
Viewers will likely see Morgan challenging the new boss to prove his abilities, but Reyes expressed a hope that the show will explore this dynamic soon. She explained it this way:
I hope she understands why she wasn’t chosen. Even if someone explains it, it doesn’t always make sense until you come to that realization yourself. It can be a really frustrating process, and make you question things.
It’s noteworthy that people generally assume Soto is both capable and deserving of the position. It’s possible that, as we learn more about her background, we’ll discover reasons why her superiors chose her over other candidates.

Karadec And The New Captain
The new captain seems to be off to a rocky start with his team and coworkers. It’s unlikely Wagner and Soto will become close friends, and he’ll probably have to work hard to stay in Morgan’s good graces – or at least avoid her outright hostility.
Could a real connection be developing between Wagner and Karadec? Judy Reyes seems to suggest it’s possible, saying:
I’m really fascinated by the dynamic between the main character and Karadec – they just click, and it’s clear they’re going to be a strong team. But you *know* things are going to be complicated with Morgan. She’s not going to make things easy, and I’m already anticipating a lot of tension as her motives and methods are questioned. She’s a real puzzle, and I think she’ll really push him to his limits.
There are several ways to interpret their “powerful working relationship” that don’t automatically mean Karadec is betraying his friends to please the new captain. I’m not saying this reflects on me personally, but…
It would be compelling to see Daniel Sunjata’s straightforward detective develop a strictly professional relationship with Captain Wagner, especially because it would likely irritate Morgan. She’s bound to clash with him, and he’s earned it after his unsettling introduction. If he truly knows so much about her, he should also be aware of her history with overly-familiar men.
The showrunner for *High Potential* hinted that a love triangle might develop with the new captain, but I’m still choosing to believe that was just a playful comment.
Season 2 of ‘High Potential’ is coming to ABC in 2025, with new episodes premiering every Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
