Battlefield 6 devs revealed the „magic” trick behind the game’s performance. „We’re not on the PS4 any more”

A key feature of the Battlefield games is the ability to destroy the environment. The upcoming sixth game takes this to the next level, with noticeably improved destruction compared to Battlefield 2042. The developers recently shared one of the main reasons they were able to achieve this impressive result.

Dropping old consoles

PC Gamer recently interviewed developers from EA DICE and Criterion. They confirmed that the biggest influences on the new Battlefield game (BF6) were Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 – something fans have suspected for a while. The developers also discussed the game’s impressive environmental destruction. Christian Buhl, the game’s Technical Director, shared details about what makes it look so good.

Perhaps the biggest improvement is simply that we’re no longer limited by the older PlayStation and Xbox consoles. By moving past those platforms, we’ve been able to significantly increase the game’s processing power and memory, which naturally leads to better performance. We’re no longer having to compromise to make it run on, say, a PS4.

With the previous generation of consoles now over 12 years old, letting go of them felt like a huge relief for the creator. However, he explained that it still took a significant amount of effort from the development team. A key part of the process was utilizing the Frostbite engine, originally designed for the Battlefield series, which prioritizes realistic and extensive environmental destruction.

Beyond simply improving the basic groundwork, creating this game involves a huge amount of effort. We’re doing extensive testing, including testing how things break and fall apart, and fine-tuning many different aspects. We’re using the Frostbite engine, which was originally designed for Battlefield and excels at creating realistic destruction – that’s a fundamental part of how the engine works.

The highly anticipated game, *Battlefield 6*, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S starting October 10th. For specific release times, please check our earlier coverage. We’ve also updated the system requirements, including new settings called “Ultra++”. Just a reminder that to play BF6, you’ll need to have TPM 2.0 and secure boot turned on, and your system must support HVCI and VBS.
