A new, highly anticipated series on Netflix, adapted from a popular book, is rapidly becoming a hit with viewers.
Many of Netflix’s hit shows are adapted from popular books, including thrillers like Fool Me Once (based on a novel by Harlan Coben), the sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem (from Liu Cixin’s trilogy), and the acclaimed The Queen’s Gambit (based on Walter Tevis’s novel). This also applies to shows with more dramatic storylines, such as Bridgerton, which has made Julia Quinn’s romance novels incredibly popular worldwide. Now, a new, attention-grabbing adaptation is quickly becoming a hit on the streaming platform.
Netflix’s new South African drama, The Polygamist, is gaining popularity quickly after its release. Inspired by Sue Nyathi’s novel of the same name, the series centers on Joyce, a seemingly perfect wife whose life unravels when she discovers her husband’s infidelities.
Since its release on June 12th, the first season of The Polygamist has become a hit on Netflix, reaching the No. 4 spot on the Global Top 10 list for non-English shows. It garnered 2 million views between June 8th and 14th. The show is currently behind Teach You a Lesson, My Royal Nemesis, and Rosario Tijeras season 5, but ahead of shows like The Evil Lawyer season 1, Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, Viral Hit season 1, The WONDERfools, Rafa season 1, and Losing Judgment season 1.
The series features a talented cast including Gugu Gumede, Kwanele Mthethwa, S’Thandiwe Kgoroge, Vuyo Biyela, S’Dumo Mtshali, Lwazie Keith Mfeka, Kenneth Nkosi, Wonder Ndlovu, Luyanda Zwane, Noluthando Shabalala, and Celeste Ntuli. Akin Omotoso, known for The Brave Ones, is the showrunner.
The film The Polygamist currently has only two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t enough for an official critics’ score. However, both reviews are positive; Joel Keller from Decider described it as being just as dramatic and over-the-top as a classic telenovela – and meant that as a compliment, noting the show is packed with intense emotions and wild events.
Karishma Dipa from Independent Online (South Africa) says the show will captivate audiences with its intense emotions, dramatic conflicts, and unexpected plot twists. While The Polygamist doesn’t have enough viewer ratings to receive an official audience score, people are finding it a compelling watch thanks to its gripping story, strong acting, and addictive nature. Some viewers feel the voice-overs are distracting, however.
Given its current popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising if The Polygamist continues to rise in Netflix’s rankings over the next few weeks.
