As a huge fan of Charlie Hunnam, I’m thrilled to see his newest TV show absolutely crushing it on all the streaming platforms! Seriously, the story is at the very top of the charts worldwide. It’s amazing to see such a great show getting the recognition it deserves!
According to FlixPatrol, Monster: The Ed Gein Story is currently the most popular TV show on Netflix worldwide, as of October 5, 2025. Added to the streaming service just last Friday, the series has quickly risen to the #1 spot in 37 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The show features the story of convicted murderer and body snatcher Ed Gein. This new installment is the third season of the anthology series created by Ryan Murphy, which examines the lives of infamous ‘monsters’, with each season focusing on a different killer.
As a critic, I have to say The Ed Gein Story marks a bit of a shift for this series. It’s the first installment not directly created by Ryan Murphy; instead, we have Ian Brennan (Glee, Scream Queens) at the helm. This eight-episode dive really unpacks Gein’s life and, importantly, examines the crimes that went on to inspire some truly iconic horror movies – think The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs, for example. It’s fascinating to see the roots of those films explored in such detail.
Besides Hunnam, the series features Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) as Gein’s mother, Augusta. Tom Hollander plays the role of Alfred Hitchcock. Suzanna Son stars as Adeline Watkins, a woman who has a romantic relationship with Gein, and Vicky Krieps completes the leading cast as Ilse Koch, a Nazi war criminal.
Even with all the buzz around the latest season of Monster, critics haven’t agreed on whether it’s good. The Ed Gein Story currently has a low rating, and viewers don’t seem much more impressed, giving it a score of 56%. This makes it the lowest-rated season so far; Dahmer received 57%, and The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story scored a bit lower at 45%. In total, the review aggregator considers the series ‘rotten,’ with an average score of 48%.
The Ed Gein Story is Hunnam’s Darkest Role to Date
Playing Ed Gein is a significant change for Hunnam, who is known for roles like Jax Teller in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z, and Arthur Pendragon in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The actor recently spoke about preparing for the role, stating: “I wanted to get as close as possible to who Ed was.”
He also discussed how he studied rare footage of the serial killer to prepare for his role. Hunnam explained, “I managed to view the only existing recording of Ed Gein, which was captured just two days after his arrest.” He continued, “It’s roughly an hour-and-ten-minute interview conducted while he was in police custody. I was able to learn a lot about his mannerisms – his rhythm of speech, how he emphasized words, his vocabulary, and his overall energy – by watching it.”
Monster: The Ed Gein Story is now streaming on Netflix.
