CBS Officially Pulls The Plug On Tracker’s Best Season 4

The fourth season of Tracker was shaping up nicely, but CBS unexpectedly cancelled it at the last second. After a seven-month run, Justin Hartley’s show concluded its 2025-2026 season with some big answers. The season 3 finale finally explained the mystery surrounding Ashton Shaw’s death, a question that had been central to the series since it began in 2024. Now that this storyline is resolved, the show plans to move in a new direction when it returns this fall.

Just before the fourth season of Tracker begins, a significant change is happening: production is moving from Vancouver to Los Angeles. This is the first time in the show’s history it will film outside of Canada, thanks to a substantial tax incentive. It’s unclear how this location shift will affect the story, given that the show centers around Colter traveling across the country. Beyond that, details about what’s next for Jensen Ackles’ character are scarce, but the dynamic between Russell Shaw and his brother, which was a key element in season 3, could become a central focus moving forward.

Tracker Season 3 Finale Effectively Splits Up Colter & Russell

It certainly looked like the show was heading in one direction. Season 3 of Tracker gave Justin Hartley’s character a bigger role, and with Ashton’s storyline finished, it seemed like Russell and Colter would finally become a true team. However, the last few minutes of the season finale threw a curveball, changing everything. Instead of the brothers celebrating their victory over the corrupt facility, Russell was assigned a secret mission and had to keep it from Colter.

Hints suggest Ashton may have harmed Colter when they were younger. The season 3 finale of Tracker didn’t reveal details, but Russell seemed desperate to hide what happened, even going to extreme lengths. He ultimately had to leave, relying on Reenie to explain his absence. Given his skills, Russell will likely succeed in his new mission, but even if he returns and confesses to Colter, the damage from years of lies could create a further rift between them. This could make it harder for them to collaborate closely in season 4 of Tracker.

Why A Colter & Russell Partnership Is The Best-Case Scenario For Tracker’s Future

Colter and Russell didn’t always get along. At the beginning of Tracker, they were estranged due to unresolved feelings about their father’s death. Over the course of the show, they worked through their issues and became very close, with Russell consistently being there for his brother when he needed support. Jared Padalecki is a big draw for viewers, and he convincingly portrays the older Shaw brother, making his presence in Tracker a joy to watch. His lighthearted approach perfectly complements Colter’s more serious nature, creating an entertaining dynamic between the two.

However, Russell’s presence provides Colter with consistent help in the field. Even with support from Reenie, Randy, and Mel, the survivalist largely works alone. The show’s success heavily relies on Hartley’s character, which is natural given he’s the main focus. But for the show to last, it needs to explore more storylines. Creating network television is demanding, with so many episodes produced each year. It would be beneficial for Hartley to have a partner to share the challenges going forward.
