Amazon reveals they’re making three animated AI shows in new GenAI push

Amazon is heavily investing in artificial intelligence, recently approving three animated series created with the help of a new fund dedicated to generative AI tools.

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common, appearing in video game environments, books, anime, and artwork in many creative ways. It was therefore inevitable that AI would eventually be used in film and television production.

As a huge fan, I’m really excited to see Amazon MGM doubling down on AI! They just announced a GenAI Creators Fund and gave us a sneak peek at three new shows coming to Prime Video – all animated using artificial intelligence. It’s a bold move, and I can’t wait to see what they create!

Amazon reveals they’re embracing AI in new Creator Fund

Amazon Prime is developing a new platform called Project Nara, as first reported by Variety. It’s designed to be a shared workspace that combines AI with popular creative tools like Adobe, Unreal Engine, and Blender, making production processes more efficient.

According to MGM’s COO, Albert Cheng, the combination of these two things is intended to unlock new creative possibilities for television and film, enabling the creation of content that wasn’t feasible before.

As a fan, it’s awesome to hear that the team is tackling one of the biggest worries creators have – that AI just doesn’t always get what you need it to do. They’re saying they’re actually building tools that make these AI models really useful for people working in the creative industries, which is exactly what we’ve been waiting for!

Under the GenAI Creator’s Fund, three new animated series have been greenlit:

  • Punky Duck: A punk duck and his friend, Smiley Cat, tear through Los Angeles, stumbling into alien invasions, monsters, robot criminal conspiracies, and supernatural mayhem. By the director behind The Book of Life.
  • Love, Diana Music Hunter: A young band of K-pop space-traveling musicians race to Planet Goo, where they must perform a concert to restore the music and save the aliens.
  • Cupcake & Friends: A cupcake and her friends face the challenges of a sleepover, with twists abound. Created by BuzzFeed.

Each show was given a five-week deadline to produce its pilot episode, as the network wanted to demonstrate a fast turnaround time.

We don’t have exact premiere dates for these shows yet, but they will all be available on Prime Video. It’s also unclear if the shows are completely created using artificial intelligence, or if creators are simply using AI tools to help with specific parts of the production.
