Hero Maine Coon cat saves family from carbon monoxide poisoning

A Maine couple says their cat saved them from carbon monoxide poisoning by waking them up to a dangerous leak in their house.

Mojo, a Maine Coon cat from Cushing, Maine, is being celebrated as a hero. Earlier this month, her strange meows alerted William and Pat Aboud to a serious problem.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Pat started feeling a headache after dinner on Monday, May 4th, but at first, they didn’t think it was anything serious.

That night, as Pat headed up to bed to get something for her pain, Mojo followed and started meowing strangely—it was a sound the couple hadn’t heard from him before.

William went upstairs to see if the cat was okay, but he quickly got winded. When he came back down, he started to feel a headache, while Mojo the cat continued to cry and relax on the floor.

Around 11 PM, Pat went downstairs to see how Mojo was doing. William was concerned the cat might need a vet, but when he tried to get up and walk, he felt disoriented and said things seemed to be moving in slow motion.

Someone staying with the family helped William escape the house using a wheeled chair. They then called 911 for assistance.

After arriving at the scene, emergency responders discovered dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in the house. The source was a broken propane furnace located in the basement.

William was first taken to Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport, then flown by LifeFlight to a Boston hospital, where he spent two and a half hours in a hyperbaric chamber for treatment. Pat, on the other hand, received oxygen at the scene and didn’t need any additional medical attention.

Mojo was placed in a car so she could get fresh air.

William reported that the smoke alarms in the house were outdated and didn’t detect carbon monoxide. The family has now replaced them with alarms that do detect carbon monoxide, and they’ve also had the furnace fixed.

For her efforts, Mojo has been rewarded with extra treats for her life-saving heroics.

It’s amazing how many cats are becoming heroes lately! I recently read about a kitten who was so brave, it actually saved its owner from a house fire – sadly, it lost its own life doing so. It just goes to show how much love and courage these little animals have.

Just last April, a cat became a hero again, alerting its owner to a fire caused by a failing NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card in their computer.
