ElevenLabs has used AI to recreate the voice of the late Stan Lee, allowing fans to hear him narrate books as if he were still alive. The company has effectively ‘brought back’ his voice through artificial intelligence.
Stan Lee, the famous creator behind Marvel Comics, passed away in 2018 at the age of 95. For years, he made appearances in every Marvel movie, often narrating or making brief cameos, always being his recognizable self. Now, through an agreement between ElevenLabs and Stan Lee Universe (a partnership of Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment), his voice will be used to narrate audiobooks of stories he never had the chance to read, and his likeness will appear in comic book art he never created.
ElevenLabs licenses Stan Lee’s voice and likeness for AI narration and fan-generated images
The AI audio company has added a digital version of Keith Lee’s voice and image to its marketplace, where businesses can license them for use in ads and other commercial projects.
ElevenLabs has created a digital voice based on recordings of Lee, and is now offering it alongside comic book-style visuals. Users can create images and videos featuring his voice and likeness, but only for personal, non-commercial projects.
I was really excited to hear that Lee’s voice is going to be reading audiobooks on the Eleven Reader app! They’re starting with Treasure Island in June, which is awesome. And get this – they’re planning to release a new classic book every month, all as a way to honor how much Lee loved reading. It’s a really cool way to keep his legacy going.
As a huge Stan Lee fan, I always felt like I knew him through his comics – like I could practically hear him talking! Chaz Rainey from Stan Lee Universe explained that’s something a lot of fans have said over the years. Now, they’re working with ElevenLabs to actually make that happen, which is incredible. It’s like getting to hear Stan himself narrate his stories – a dream come true!
Christopher Lee’s voice is now available on the Iconic Marketplace, alongside those of other famous figures like Michael Caine, Judy Garland, Burt Reynolds, David Hasselhoff, and Albert Einstein. ElevenLabs has also added two new filters to its AI music generator, designed to create sounds inspired by comic books: “Superhero Cinematic Swells” and “Retro Hero Fanfare.”
This agreement happened in a strong year for the company, following a $500 million funding round in early 2026 that valued it at $11 billion.
For years, there’s been debate about who controls a person’s voice and how it can be used after they’re gone. Recently, voice actors for Apex Legends protested a contract that would have given away ownership of their voices, and renowned broadcaster David Attenborough expressed concern about AI copies made of his voice, calling them unsettling.
