Marathon Season 2 Bets on Darkness to Forget the Ghost of Destiny 2

With Destiny 2’s ongoing support winding down, Bungie is heavily focusing on their new game, Marathon. Season 2 will bring a lot of fresh content, like a new player customization option called the Sentinel, and a nighttime version of the Dire Marsh map.

The unsettling sounds of the UESC ships were already frightening, but Bungie is taking the fear to a whole new level in Season 2. They’re really embracing the dark and foreboding atmosphere of the original Marathon game, and introducing even more dangerous enemies.

Marathon Season 2 is Jam-Packed with New Content and Improvements

Marathon, a new game released only a few months ago, has faced strong competition and some challenges. However, Bungie, the game’s developer, has made it clear they are committed to continuing its development and support.

Marathon’s Season 2 brings two major updates: the Sentinel defensive system and a new night mode for the Dire Marsh area. According to Bungie, the new Dire Marsh night mode features unique gameplay elements, enemies, and places to discover. It’s designed to be slower and more intense, resembling a survival horror game with fewer players and added challenges like navigating in the dark and dealing with new dangers.

You’ll now be able to explore a new area called Complex Control. It’s located in Dire Marsh and was visible in Season 1, but previously inaccessible to players.

You can now access this area with UESC encryption certificates. These certificates can also be used to infiltrate network towers, which hold valuable resources like medical supplies, weapons, and other useful items.

These certificates are essential for leaving Night Marsh, as they’re needed to unlock the extraction points. This makes eliminating UESC more important than ever.

Good news! Bungie is making sure you’re ready for what’s coming, and here’s what you can expect in Season 2:

  • Flashlights: All Night Marsh Runners will have a flashlight.
  • Vector rounds: Bullets that create light where they land, illuminating UESC and Runners on impact.
  • Vector grenades: Light up the environment and ping nearby enemies.
  • Darksight scopes: Highlights the environment around you for a brief period after you ADS.
  • Signal Flares: Used to illuminate the area.

New threats are appearing in Night Marsh, so you’ll need serious protection to reach the extraction point safely. The new Sentinel shell offers just that – it can block incoming attacks and let you set up traps to defend your position.

Here are the Sentinel’s abilities and traits:

The Defender System is an ultimate ability that sets up an automated laser platform. This platform destroys enemy projectiles and improves weapon handling speed for teammates who are nearby.

Snare Mine (tactical ability): Proximity-triggered mine that immobilizes enemies.

The Castle Doctrine trait makes your character handle close-range weapons more quickly when enemies are nearby. It also provides increased defenses after being hit by explosive or area-of-effect attacks.

Prey Tracker: A short-range system that uses radar to detect moving targets nearby.

You’ll need more than flashlights and flares to make it to the exfil in one piece.

Bungie is significantly changing how players improve their character stats this season with a new system called ‘The Cradle’. Players can now trade in unwanted weapons and valuable items for energy, which is used to upgrade their core stats.

Runners will use the energy they gain to improve their abilities in six areas: strength, recharge rate, dexterity, support skills, endurance, and resistance.

Beyond the new gear, enemies, and game mode, Destiny 2 is also overhauling how factions work. Each faction now offers a set of unique armor pieces – for your head, chest, and legs – designed to match their specific playstyle. For example, NuCaloric armor focuses on staying alive with healing and toughness, while MIDA armor emphasizes speed and disrupting enemies.

Marathon is planning to create more content for players who prefer cooperative or solo experiences. They’re working on game modes designed specifically for PvE and others that blend player-versus-environment and player-versus-player elements.
