I can’t believe it, but that huge 70-foot statue of Lionel Messi they built in India is already having problems! Apparently, it’s been declared unsafe just a few months after they put it up. It’s really disappointing to hear, especially as a big fan.
Okay, so everyone knows Lionel Messi, right? He’s from Argentina, but honestly, as a gamer who’s seen all the greats, I think most people agree he’s the best football player ever. You’ll always get fans from Brazil arguing for Pelé or Portugal shouting about Cristiano Ronaldo, and that’s fair, but Messi is just on another level. He dominates that conversation, hands down.
Lionel Messi is so popular that statues of him have been built outside of his home country, Argentina. One statue is located in India, unveiled in December during his visit and a chance to meet his many fans there.
Unfortunately, if you were hoping to see the 70-foot monument in Kolkata, it’s currently unavailable for visitors.
Messi statue set to be taken down in India
According to BBC Sport, residents have reported the 70-foot statue is moving in the wind and is now considered unsafe.
According to West Bengal state legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee, the statue of the Argentine football legend is unstable. He reported that it’s been observed moving back and forth in the wind.
Officials plan to move the statue as soon as possible, but Mukherjee noted it won’t be simple. The statue is large and located very close to a busy road, making the process challenging.

Even though he was injured in his last game for Inter Miami, Lionel Messi is expected to play in the World Cup, which begins on June 11th. Argentina will be trying to win the tournament again, as they were the champions in Qatar in 2022.
The 2026 World Cup is facing criticism because tickets and transportation to games are very expensive. Surprisingly, some ticket prices have dropped dramatically – for example, tickets to see Saudi Arabia play Cape Verde are now cheaper than buying a single beer!
